RAIPUR, India (Reuters) - Indian police began a probe on Monday into reports that villagers in a tribal area of central India beat 50 women with sticks after accusing them of witchcraft, and cut off their hair.
The villagers acted on the advice of a local spiritual man who said the assault would protect them from evil spirits, in a forest in a poor district of Chhattisgarh state, 400km (250 miles) from the capital Raipur, police said.
Dozens of women are killed every year on suspicion of being witches or witch doctors in India, where superstition is widespread, especially in rural areas that lack an effective schooling system.

It is possible that we are the cause of our own problems. Unlike other religions and believes, we don't have dogma or some form of centralized believes. Hence we are not able to spread the believe as effectively as others, and the confusion mixed with thousands of years of superstitions, propaganda and fear ends up as a potential for bad bad situations.
I often wondered if this could be changed if we pagans and witches can formula some form of entry-level textbooks (read fluffy bunnies' guide to magic), and more or less use it as tool to take over the wor... I meant educate people.

yeah but then we may be taken as if we are the same as the people that are obsessed with recruiting people to their religion etc.. one thing i like about being wiccan is that we dont try to convert people.. we let people be..
but yeah i do some times wonder too if by pagans being quiet if its not hurting us in making it seem as if we are not as common therefore something to be feared

Ya, we're too nice to do the whole Neca eos omnes. Deus suos agnoset (Kill them all let God sort them out), so we'll just have to do that their leaders refuse to do, educate them.
Wait, could that be the reason why they are trying to weed us out? Cause we're trying to educate their flock?

lol i have found that with some religions any time you try to educate them on facts and if those facts prove their ideas incorrect then you are just SCREWED

yes but they dont hunt for them.. and i have heard more people having problems with satanist (not saying its true for the satanist out there reading) with animals not witches.. being a witch and knowing a lot of witches i cant list one that has ever harmed an animal..
as far as covens there are many.. ten years ago within a 40 mile stretch between two towns there were at least 30 here but i dont think that any quality ones would let themselves be so well known to be counted so there are probably a lot more..

Like what the article indicated, this is happening in the rural areas where education is not very well established in the village.
Even in the west, we are still seeing discrimination of women in the name of supersitions. Remember the case where this spritual leader has a lot of kids fathered by him. Some sort of a cult or something. It also happened in the more rural outbacks in the country.
The world is so big. Anything can happen.
