What is 5star or 7star hotel?

We all heard about 5star hotel,3star or 7star also. But I want to know what these stars signify for. Are these stars symbolize something or these are used just to show how big and comfortable hotels they are? Please tell me the real meaning of these stars.

The higher star is a better maintained hotel plus what amenities they offer such as swimming pools, restaurant, etc. But a hotel with a lower star because they don't have the pools, gym equipment, etc, doesn't always mean they are not good hotels. I have stayed in hotels rated at 4 or 5, and it was clean and well maintained.

Ok, the higher the rating the more luxurious the hotel is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_(classification) has a good explanation. I was surprised to read there has only been one hotel with a one star rating and only one with a seven. Now I am going back to read the rest of the story on star rating.
