Having a driving license but no car?

China
December 25, 2008 1:37am CST
First, may i wish everyone here merry X'mas and happy new year! wish everyone's dream come true next year! and how baout the driving license in ur country? here, in China, driving license is very popular among students. we joined some driving schools and attended the training. But most of us are not able to buy cars ourselves, even we got our license. I asked the reason for the driving license tide. most of them said a driving license would help them in finding a better job. maybe they are right. myself..jump into this sea..to catch this fashion. I know exactly i will forget all when i have enough money to own my own car... but still i joined this training.. how do u think about this tide? is it reasonable? thank you for reading! merry christmas and happy new year! best wishes for everyone!

well theres nothing wrong if u have a driving license but no car. what ur going to do is put it as one of ur goal to have a car someday. well i have drivers license but i dont have car but its for personal purposes and security purposes cause everytime i borrowed the motorcycle of my friends they trusted me because i do have a license so i wont be caught by the traffic enforcer if ever their going to inspect me on the streets. well dream thay one day u will have a car.

Merry Christmas! happy new year! Driving license is not helping for finding a job. but it is better than nothing. you are lucky than me, I only plan to get it recently, even I work for 5 years. But it is true that you can only have opportunity to drive a car unless you have a license. and anyway, you need to get it one day, so do it now is a good idea if possible.

Hello, babyorchid, and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you, too, and then again in February, right? Well, where we live there is a lot of space for parking cars and not much public transportation so just about everyone drives. I think everyone should know how to drive a car even if they don't have one yet. Best wishes to you, too.

:-), i just got my driving licence about half an month ago and it really made me excited that day while i thought that finally at least i would be allowed to try to drive a car by myself. but on the other hand, i know that there is still a longe way to go before i can really drive on myself because as you know most of the driving exams in china doesnot actually insure you a qualified driver and more practices still need to be done. in my opinion, driving ability will be necessary for us after graduation from college and therefore why not prepare it as early as possible when you have enough spare time? hi, babyorchid, wish you good luck. merry chrismas and happy mylotting.

Well i think its good that you learned how to drive. i mean i think it will benefit you. As for me, its the opposite, i have a car and am license-less. Why don't i have a license, well thats simple i guess i am a bit too lazy to go get it. I do drive around without it but i know that will get me into trouble.

Driving is a great skill to have if you use it. Otherwise what is the point in having a license if you don't drive. An ID will cover anmything else. I suggest if you think you will forget by time you can own a car. I suggest you take a refresher course in driving to help you remember. Driving is not a game. The wrong move can cause you to loose your life or worse someone else's.

Yes, a refresher course. Do they not offer them in your area? They do in mine. I think refresher courses are great to help refrsh teh mind in doing things.

if i didn't make a mistake...we don't have such a course here. we only offer driving course..but for the newer..not for the old hand. but if their license is past due. then they have to join the driving course again to get their license again hehee

refresher course? oh...i think once i forget i would like to ask others teach me..then i will pick up quickly1 haha omg..yeah..we call the new drivers "road killer"..bcz they are not familiour with driving.. i would be very careful, a car accident is really horrrible thanks best wishes

When I first got my driving licence here in the UK, I did not have a car either. But I did manage to get driving jobs, so you are right there. A driving licence can open up opportunities in the job market that were not there before. Of course, many firms here prefer experienced drivers, but everybody has to start somewhere, and once I had one job, it was much easier to get other better-paid jobs. Good luck.. :-) Derek

A very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too. I've never thought that having a driving license would help someone find a better job. It would definitely help some people secure jobs especially if those jobs require someone to have a driving license due to the need for traveling in carrying out the work, eg. a sales job, deliveryman, etc. I started learning driving when I was still studying in the university, and I remember when I started work in my early 20's, I already had a car to drive to work. Having a license or car then didn't help me secure my job nor gave me better job prospect. I was among the fortunate few because my father was retired and he hardly used his car, so he let me use it for work. All my working life, I had been driving and owning different cars, so I can't imagine myself getting around without one. Occasionally I still do leave my car at home and take public transport like buses and trains in order to save money.

babyorchid, a drivers license is almost a necessity these days for everything from identification purposes to qualifying for a job. It will serve you well to get on the gravy train and earn a license even if you cannot afford a car. Your earning possibility is greatly more enhanced if you possess one. My vote is to get that license as soon as you are old enough and can afford the lessons.

How about a car and no license? LOL My license is in bad need of renewal and I still haven't taken care of that. But you definitely need a license, driving gives you freedom and makes you more independent. Good for your job, too.

Don't worry, driving is not hard. I was wary of driving for a long time but now I'm a highway stalker lol What changed my mind is that I looked around and saw a lot of people who could hardly tie their shoe laces but they didn't have any problem at the steering wheel. Very encouraging, makes one hopeful that our roads are safe:D

In the U S, a driver's license is used for identification to cash a check and at some stores, even to use a credit card. I understand that one can purchase a state ID card at the driver's license for those who do not need a driver's license. In the state of Texas where I live, children can hardly wait until they turn 15 so that they can get their permit that allows them to drive with a licensed driver 18 or older in the front seat with them. On their 16th birthday, most will be in line at the driver's license bureau to be tested for their license. They will have to pass both a written test and the driving test. If they fail either part, they can try again later; I believe in 6 months.

Many here also have drivers licenses and no cars, but it does help, that way families have more then one driver and if you have a job you can be available to drive it anyone needs you too. It's also a good source of identification. Happy New Year to you also

Merry Christmas to you too! I think having a drivers licence is vital as it makes such a difference to your life. You will realize this when you get your car; it's great to be independent and get around as much and when you want without relying on friends or public transport. My mother is almost 70 and she says her biggest regret is not learning to drive, because she relies on my Dad who is also getting old and not so keen on driving anymore. We are trying to convince my sister to get her licence. She's a single mum and a car would be a great help to her, but she says that now that she's almost 33 she's not as adventurous as when she was in her early twenties and feels afraid to learn how to drive. So it's good to obtain a licence as soon as you can even if you don't have a car yet; at least you have it, because like my mum if you don't do it early on, you may never get around to it.

babyorchid, I think having a driving license would be handy even if you cannot afford to have a car at the present moment. It does help with your future job if requires you to commute about and the company will provide a car for that or even help finance a purchase. I am not sure if ladies in your country would be keen in a chauffeur job but I have seen a number of lady taxi drivers emerging, so I suppose that will be the other area where the driving license will be useful. I do have my license for the various classes i.e. from motorcycles to commercial buses. However, I am just driving a normal car for now and I do have an international driving license as well, which will allow me to drive when I am traveling overseas. You might want to have it too. Cheers and compliments of the season.

In the USA its not that uncommon for a teen to have a license and not have a car, it cost a lot of money to buy a car, insure it and fill it up with gas. I think its better to have a license and not have a car then to have a car and not have a license, then you run the risk of never getting your license if you get caught.

yeah....absolutely right. having a license without a car is better then having a car without a license. haha... best wishes happy new year

jump into this sea...to catch this fashion, yes, that's what I'm going to do exactly.Im sure it would be a long time before i could afford a car. Also, there is no need for me to own a private car at present. My workplace is just 5 mins work from home, and I dont go out often.Anyway, i wanna get a driving license in the near future. That's one of my New Year's resolutions. hahahaha...Best wishes!

Hello my friend and Merry Christmas to you too! Here in the UK it's absolutely vital to have some form of identification in order to get a job and most employers will only accept either a driving license or a passport. I don't have a passport, I've never had one, but I got my driving license back recently after being disqualified for twelve months. I can't afford to buy a car at the moment though which is very frustrating but it's good to know that the license is there and I am saving up to buy a car a few months after Christmas hopefully.
