Do you listen to movie critics?

Whenever a new film comes out you often see movie critics on TV saying whether a movie was good or bad. Do you decide to watch a movie based on whether a critic says it's good or bad? Or do you base it on what your friends or family say?
I personally don't listen to critics because there were several times when a critic said a movie was bad and when I went to see it I liked it (for example: I heard a bad review of "Seven Pounds" but I liked the movie). I also don't decide to not watch a movie if a friend says that they didn't like it because they have their own opinions and I have mine. There were times when my friends said a film was bad and I liked it.
Anyways, what about you guys?

I usually look at the overall percentage from Rotten Tomatoes since I tend to agree with those critics. I just watch movies if they have 60% rating or better.

No I dont listen to film critics just because a film critic may not like a movie dosent mean I wont like it ether in fact its quite the opposite for me, because I have a tendency to like films that critics hate for example I loved the film version of frank Herbart's dune, and of course the critics hated that, and I liked howard the duck, and the critics hated that too, oh and I love the classic original version of the TV mini series V, and I dont think the critics liked that ether, but I dont care because everyone's taste is different, and yea those films may be a little cheesy but I still find them very entertaining and nostalgic they bring back a lot of good child hood memory's and I just love the over all films themselves movies today dont have the same feel that some of the movies and television shows had back then.

Dune was awesome! Did you see the four hour director's cut?

Yep that's another thing that I base my decision on, who's acting in it or who directed it.

I think everything will have both positive and negative side. For example, there are negative critics for Hancock but I still watched it. After I watched it, it's just a so so movie in my opinion. But at least I can make my judgment if I watched it. As to Severn Pounds, I am interested in it because it was starring by Will Smith. I think it will be a good movie.
I love china

cool I agree. I actually wanted to see Seven Pounds because Will Smith was in it but also because of a comment that he said about the movie on a talk show. I can't remember exactly what he said but it made it seem like the movie was deep and had meaning and I like movies that are like that.
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Take care.

I don't watch or read movie critics ever since two movies The Crying Game and The Sixth Sense were ruined by them spoiling the ending! Besides I like to go to a movie knowing as little about it as possible so I will always be surprised and can make by own decision. There have been movies I really liked such as M. Night Shyamalan's "The Happening", "The Village" and "Lady in the Water", to name a few that critics hated. "The Happening' was voted the worst movie of 2008 on America Online and I loved it. On the other hand there have been movies I absolutely hated, like "Lost in Translation," that the critics loved. My point is that no one can tell you what you're gonna like you just have to take the chance and see the movie. I find movie critics completely useless unless you know them and they have a similar taste in movies. Merry Christmas!

Very well said. I agree. That's another issue, them giving away the movies. I was kind of young when "The Sixth Sense" came out so I didn't really know about critics (well I probably did but didn't pay attention to them lol) so I'm glad that that didn't ruin the movie for me.
I like knowing as little as possible about a movie before I go to see it as well. I think that it's better because then you get the full effect of the suspense or the surprises in the movies. That's part of the fun of it. I absolutely hate watching movies with people who've seen it before lol. My grandmother likes to tell the whole plot as it's unfolding. I usually watch movies I know she's seen before when she's not around.

yes, i agree with what your say......
I decide to watching a movie because I really want to see it, I don't care what people saying about, just like Narnia, I heard some people say it was boring, but I love it very very much, it even became my most favourites movie! Eragon movie too, i know it got very low rating from other people, but i found i'm quite enjoy this movie!

I actually saw The Chronicles of Narnia for the first time yesterday or the day before when it was on TV. I didn't see it from the beginning though. I always heard that it was good though. I heard someone say that it was better than Harry Potter but I think the Harry Potter movies are better. I heard of Eragon but I never saw it.

There are some I listen to, because their tastes are similar to mine and they give good information on what the movies are about, their strong and weak points, etc. Sometimes if I hear a movie is bad from a lot of critics, I will definitely avoid it, unless I want to see it anyway because I like a particular actor in it or I like the story it's based on.

cool. I usually don't like hearing their points about movies because I feel like they'll give away clues that'll ruin the movie for me but everyone's different. Some people actually don't mind hearing everything before they see the movie.
Thanks for taking the time to reply. Take care :)

But one movie which I dont agree with most of the critics is mamma mia most of them hated that movie and I thought they were wrong and thoght that was a great musical that was a lot of fun and one of my favorite musicals of all time.

I've never seen Mama Mia but I have heard the reviews. It doesn't look like something I would be interested in but I'm sure if I see it it might grow on me.
But anyways, that shows that even though a critic is considered "trustworthy" in their opinions it doesn't always match up with ours. You could've missed out on one of your favorite movies had you listened lol.

Tastes differ and what's good for one person might outrage another. However,I do care what Roger Ebert says, his opinion is reasonable and non-judgemental most times. As to movie critics from newspapers and glossy magazines,I believe they get paid for their reviews so their opinion doesn't really matter to me. How many times have you seen a totally bland and unoriginal movie that was marked as "Hilarious!" or "One of the year's best!.." by newspapers? Rottentomatoes.com and IMDB are pretty helpful, too, they consider opinions of simple folks like us.
If I like a movie and it has bad reviews-oh well, that's my life and my opinion, right? :)

Very true. Sometimes I just take a chance and go see the movie if I think that the story line and commercials look interesting. There's also a website that I go to online where there are the number of users who gave it a thumbs up and thumbs down. I can't remember which site it is right now though. If I find it I'll post it here. I usually look at that but I try not to read the comments by people because sometimes they can give away the movie.
Thanks for replying. Take care and Happy Holidays :)

Most of the time, 'yes'. I do like to read or listen critics for a movie. If I am going to invest monety to watch that movie then it is worth that what experts are to say about it. These days movie tickets are very high
Although, critics aren't true always and I might take that movie different. I mean I have heard one movie in my country that it was a good one but luckily I did'nt go theatre to watch it but watched at home by downloading it.
I found that "YUK" type movie!

sometimes, i read from the opinions of movie critics, especially if the movie is not familiar with me. in order to have an idea of it, i read their opinions and so that, i would not waste my money watching that movie, if it not interesting or entertaining after all...=)
but if i like a particular movie, and the movie critics are not good, i just don't mind it. the important is, i enjoyed it and it made me entertained. hehe!
