Many of you know I am a single parent and I had a fantastic Christmas day with my three children yesterday but on top of all the mum things, I had to adjust stabilizers on bike, put scooter together, build a play house, work out how certain electrical items worked. Achieved all but would have loved a man around for these jobs on Chritsmas day, Oh and I also carved the joints too LOL. So do you think there are certain jobs that are for the men on Christmas day? If so what ones, please share. Huggles. Hope all who celebrate had a great time. Ellie :D

It is well established Ellie that women can do anything that they want. However, in order for us chaps to feel wanted and useful, certain tasks tend to fall to us. Like inserting batteries, wielding screwdrivers and generally doing whatever our womenfolk want us to do. In exchange we get told how wonderful we are and other ego massaging words. I'm glad that you got it sorted though. If I am honest I had it quite easy this Christmas. I just had to re-tune the TV when we lost the signal. We missed the Queen, but we were up and running by Dr Who! XX

Hi P1kef1sh, So in summing up we just make you do these jobs to make you feel useful LOL, true I guess cos I can change tyres and all sorts but if a guy is around I will let him do it. Glad to hear you had an easy day of it and only had the TV to retune. We didn't watch TV at all yesterday as my younger daughter bought me the Wii fit to go woth the Wii so we were all on that. I thought it would say I was about 90 but am pleased to say fitness wise I am a few years younger than my real age. Seasons Greeetings to you. Huggles. Ellie :D

We are quite good at cuddling too! I didn't see any TV, just got it going for the girls. The Boss bought me a book that is aimed at telling me how to be the perfect husband!! I thought that I already was!!!

Having never had a man about the house, I don't also have kids. However, there are things that having a fellow about are good for. Plumbing stuff, electronic/electric stuff, repairs and stuff. I can do door knobs, and hinges and stuff, but do I WANT to? If its more than screwing the hinge in, no... I'm glad you were the one doing that, not me, but then again, there must be a reason I chose to not be a parent....

Some definate girlpower there, Ellie! It is nice to have someone around the house that knows their way around certain electrical stuff etc. as I am not very good at it either. I admire you for getting it all done! . Luckily I have my father to help me out who is very practical with these things. Unfortunatly my boyfriend isn't that handy with screwdrivers, carving, etc. So I try to learn as much from my father myself so I can do those things when I move into my own place .

Sure thing, Ellie! Share the burden and work your way through it twice as fast! Also, if there are things I have dificulty with, perhaps it's something he's good at and vica versa . I am glad to still have my parents around and learn as much as possible from them, and with having them around I mean not just that they are alive and present but actually in the same home which makes it so much easier to ask them things. Have a great evening!

Hi Cyberfluf, Learn all you can then now as my father now lives hundreds of miles away as do the rest of the family so if I want something done I have to do it myself. Get you dad to show your boyfriend too at the same time so you can share the work when you get your own place. Huggles. Ellie :D

Though there are certain 'men' jobs like the tinkering ones you mentioned....I find myself doing all of them even with a man around the house! I've always done these kind of jobs around the house before I was married and now I ended up doing the 'mum' jobs as well as the 'dad' jobs. All I have to say to you is an 'all-rounder mom' is anytime better than a 'no-good' dad/man! And you just proved that moms/women can do anything they put their minds to.

I'm sure they are all going to remain where they are. I remember complaining that my husband was never around to help me with the odd jobs....but when he did decide to turn a new leaf and 'help' me out, I had more disasters at home and decided it was better to keep him away....lol It's no fun if you don't have the right kind of man doing the job! But I know what you mean:)

I'm a single mom too....have been for years. Ya, I know what you mean but in a way, I'm glad that I had to figure it all out on my own. I have learned so so much and there is nothing like the feeling of freedom in knowing that you don't "need" anyone to help you get the job done. Now changing a tire....I do usually ask for help on that one. I can do it but I am never really confident that I've gotten the lugs tight enough etc. I do watch when someone works on my car so that I have a clue as to how to do simple stuff.

oh yes, Ellie.....electrical stuff and things like that, I definitely do ask a man that knows what he's doing to do. Same with the big plumbing jobs. I did figure out the problem with my washer once when the repair guy was still puzzeled after 2 days of trying to figure it out. I got on-line and looked it up and when he showed for the 3rd time, I told him what I thought it might be. It was just a little hole that had to be plugged with some putty. He had some in his van and it took 2 seconds. He still charged me 45.00 and did not offer me a job.

LOL--in a way I'm in the same boat as you...though don't have children, but I'm a single gal myself and yes, at times wouldn't mind a man around the house, but I'm a wee bit independent....LOL. I've had to do a LOT of "man" type things around the apartment...like assemble my behemoth sized computer desk and let's not forget that Captain's Bed I got during the summer where I had to assemble my Captain's Bed that weighed a total 150 pounds when I'm only 110...LOL. The bed supposedly was one that one could assemble just by using different types of screwdrivers...uh, nope, not really. Couldn't screw in the screws for nothing for the drawers...so........I just HAPPENED to have a drill...heehee. Wiped that thing out and I was one mean lady with that drill...solved the problem...I was able to screw in the screws with the drill in seconds.

Hi Pyewacket, Oh yes I remember you getting the bed and the problems with assembly. If I have the correct tools I can do most things but sometimes would prefer not to and just have someone else do it for me instead. The only thing I am a bit wary of is electrics so I do usually ask for help with that one. Huggles. Ellie :D

I think it's so wonderful that you have the skills and confidence to build things, put scooters together and adjust bikes. Fantastic. I do not think there are specific jobs that men should do. I'd like to think that both sexes can do all kinds of jobs. Yet, I do know that it's nice to have the support of another adult person who can share tasks and that sort of thing. I am hopeful that a really good man is in your future. Take care.

Hi Ellie. as you know I am single too, even though I have my son living with me and he is in his 20's he is absolutely usless when it comes to DIY..so I am the one who always ends Up doing things, the one thing I had to do on Christmas day was Tighten all the kitchen cupboard doors!! That is a sfar as I was going with any DIY then!! In answer to your question I think that all men or partners should do the DIY around the house whomever they are...but isn't it an accomplishment to us when we find that we can do it eh? Hi ellie, Glad you had a wonderful Christmas with your family and I know it is tough for you without a man about the house to do those little things, but it just goes to show that woman can manage when they have to, I have a hubby but I may as well be on my own as he is useless at doing any thing round the house, all he does is go biking and sleeping, eating, ask him to change a light bulb, that will take him a week to do that, if I can reach, I'll do it myself, well that is the cross I have to bear. Love and huggles. Tamara xxxx

Hi, that's nice when you can be friends with your ex that he still sends you gifts, shame all relationships can't end so nicely, I had nowt from my ex but did get a lovely surprise from one of my sisters she quite shocked me with her present so again I don't need a man with my family around..I'm so needy when it comes to recieving gifts (I am kidding) but I do take your point and I agree it's a lot easier if someone else can assemble the kids presents and it's nice to be in a relationship to share these occassions with..hugs xx

I am so happy that you had a great time with your children. You cetainly needed a man around the house to put those toys together. However, you would not have wanted my husband. He was hope less at doing anything like that - a handy man he wasn't! I am constantly amazed that the three sons are handy men. I get them to do all the jobs when they visit. Blessings

I can think of dozens of them, like putting on the light bulb on those large globe things that are on top of the ceiling, like putting up railings, banisters, moving heavy furniture, etc. I have just learned how to operate the digital camera and do stuff because my husband has arthritis and had a stroke, lost his balance, and is now too weak to do much. And now I have one of those digital frames and how to insert that little card in it to show the pictures.

Hi Suspenseful, My son is better with the camera than I am. That is great that you have a digital photo frame. It is something that I have on my wish list, as my mother lives abroad my brother bought her one last year and loaded photos of the whole of the family from the UK onto it so she has us all with her. I thought that was a lovely idea. It is a shame to hear that arthritus is preventing your hubby from doing so much. Huggles. Ellie :D
