Have you baked muffin in a toaster oven?

Okay, today I opened a packet of Betty Crocker muffin pack intending to bake some muffins for my daughter. But my oven won't work! So I did not want to plonk the entire batter into the bin, so I decided to put them in small paper cups and bake them in the toaster oven instead. It was disastrous, of course. Although it baked alright, but the base of the cups got burnt.
What a day! I have to confess that I'm lousy at cooking and baking, so this must have been one of the better days??
Have you ever tried to bake a cake in the toaster oven? Mine was not meant for baking actually.

I do not think a toaster oven can bake a muffin. I am worried if its catches fire. When I read the manual of the toaster oven it said something like it would catch fire if things are not done as mentioned in the manual. By the way, I have a question for you? Can we bake a pizza in a toaster oven? It is mentioned but I am not sure.

It can be used to heat a pizza or frozen pizza but I think it is not for making home made pizza.

Hmm... I don't have the manual. The toaster oven was given to me second hand. I definitely have tried pizzas. I use it to heat up frozen pizzas I buy from NTUC. Make sure you grease the pan first or everything would be stuck. It does a great job, actually.

I think the frozen pizza ingredients are about the same if you were to make it yourself. The ingredients are not cooked yet and they cook nicely in the toaster oven. You can always try.

Hi Sydney, happy holidays! How badly burned were they? I think it was the paper cups you used that did it. Did your daughter like it anyway? Believe me I like a lot of food that gets burned in some parts. Maybe it goes back to my childhood when my mother first bought an oven and she tried her hand at it - Devil's Food Cake, I think the recipe was called. It came out totally burned at the bottom, but I absolutely loved it, for the novelty of the whole thing. I have also used the toaster for baking since I have no regular oven, but they were just oatmeal cookies, wrapped in aluminum foil and less than a 4th inch thick, so very little baking time was needed. It came out fine. :)

Hi Nona,
It was just burnt at the bottom of the cups, but the top was fine coz I just put them in for a few minutes until it rose and took them out. It cooked much faster than the conventional oven. So I was thinking what else I could bake in the toaster, since my oven is not working.
Oatmeal cookies sounds wonderful! Maybe I should try that. I got some oatmeal left in the tie. My daughter did not like it. She's a very fussy eater. She did not really like the muffin I made. She would have one and then go on to play with the cups.
One question. How do you wrap the cookies in aluminium foil?

Oh I used a baking tin that fit into the toaster oven and lined it with aluminum foil. I placed a lot of allowance to also cover the top. Served as protection against direct heat from the oven. :)

I have never tried that before. There is no way to control the fire or the heat in the toaster oven properly in order to bake anything.
It is good for making sandwiches and sandwich pizzas. But muffins is really new for me.
I guess you need to experiment a few time with the different heat settings in order to get it right to bake your muffins so that they do not get burnt.
But it is an interesting way to cook your muffins.
So, other than the base of the cups getting burnt, how did the muffins turn out?

Yup! can't change the heating settings, so my mini muffins got burnt at the base. I think the muffin turned out okay, a little dry that's all. I'm trying something else but it did not turn out right. I must get my big oven to work soon!

I have a toasting part and a cooking part, but not baking. We buy toaster oven muffins. They're thin and round. They are for the toaster settings. But no I wouldn't try to put regular muffins in a toaster oven. The regular cooking part doesn't really work right. Oh well, you tried. Take care.

No, two parts to the dial. Just one toaster oven section.
The toaster muffins look like the top part of a muffin. Thin. Not sure if they have them in your country or not. Take care

You mean the toaster oven has two sections? Toaster oven muffins? This is the first time I hear about it. Sounds yummy!

I know. I believe it takes up more electricity too with the big oven. Do you have any tips for me on baking with toaster oven?

nope, I would never even think of doing that, but thanks for letting me know, well at least the rest of the muffins were okay and you could eat them right

I could not waste the batter, winterose! I had to find an alternative method to bake the batter. Maybe I should try frying them. Haha! Me and my silly ideas!

Last Christmas my husband bought what he thought was a toaster oven but was in fact a convection oven. You are supposed to be able to do anything in that. Basically I have been except for cooking meat. I tried to cook a roast in there the first week I got it and it took forever too cook. Baked potatoes also take longer even though the oven is set at the same temperature and put them in for the same amount of time. I find myself putting them in the microwave for a couple of minutes to complete the cooking process.
My situation is not the same as your's, but similar. With the toaster oven you are dealing with a confined space and your pan will be very close to the elements. The bottom element is the one that goes on and off all the time. The top one only goes on if you are grilling or toasting. In my regular oven I have to put a tray under anything I bake (cupcakes, muffins, cakes, meatloaf, etc.) and put the tray on the second to top rack in order not to burn the bottoms.
In my experience, all ovens are different... and unpredictable. Sorry about your disaster this morning. Live and learn, right?

My toaster oven was a gift when I moved to this apartment. It is a small one and it doesn't have many features. It probably just have one. Put in and turn the timer, that's all. No temp setting as well. And I don't think there is space for different racks, but will go and look anyways.
Lesson learn: Switch on oven first to see if it's working, before I start work on the batter.
I had this problem with my oven before. My dad said that there is moisture in the oven and if I don't use it too often, the problem will recur. Anyway, he fixed it the other time and it's not working again. I don't think I will call him again, too embarrassing.

I mainly use ONLY the toaster oven. For just one or two people, doing a huge amount in the oven is a waist - yes, i spelled that right! If I bake them, I will eat them!!! I mix up a batch of cookie dough and then drop them on cookie sheet and freeze them then put them into a plastic bag. Then I can take out 6-8 and bake them in the toaster oven and eat only 6-8 instead of 10-12! A tip: Since you are heating a smaller area then a huge oven, you can often turn the heat down a few degrees and leave the time the same. Plus, make sure you know if you toaster oven heats from the top or the bottom - if from the bottom, put your rack near the top so the bottoms don't burn. I do store bought biscuits on the top rack and cover for the first 10 minutes with foil then take the foil off the last minutes, and the tops brown just fine while the bottoms don't burn. Stick to it and work on it, it is certainly worth it if you dont' want to bake huge batches or just really quick baking

Hey! Thanks for the tips! I must try this foil thing. You are the second person suggesting it. Problem is my toaster oven is a simple one, you can't adjust the temp and it goes on high. I'm not sure if there is even enough space for top rack, I will go and check.
Can you teach me how to cover the biscuits with foil? Which part do you cover? You can tell from my stupid question, I really can't cook or bake. Please help.

No. but I have tried to fry some egg on it..lol...kidding. Well, at least , it got cooked...and tasty for sure. I hate cooking too. I just love eating but don't want to do the dirty work. I would rather wash the dishes than cook, or clean the house. I only how to cook rice and fried egg and even that, I oftentimes either burn them or cook them half-cooked. That's why at home my husband do the cooking. And my, does he cook well, so delicious. Yummy. Happy holidays Sydney, cheers. Good luck to you and your writing this 2009.

My, you are so lucky to have such a wonderful cook for a husband. My hubby can't cook. I can only do fried rice, spaghetti (since it comes in a bottle) and simple vegetable dishes. As for eggs, scrambled is the only one I can manage.
Ermm.. How do you fry an egg on the toaster oven? Haha!
Sigh! I'd rather wash dishes too!

I'm wondering now if it would have baked in the microwave oven. Maybe I can try the next time. My daughter like one or two. She did not fancy them too much, a little dry on the throat, so I just give her one or two at a time.
They are not burnt too much. Most of it can be eaten actually.
