I've been reading so many reports for years now, and especially this year on how much money the Yankees spend on free agents during the off season. I am not a Yankee fan. But tas a sports fan, if a team has the money to spend, they have the right to do so. I'm a Red Sox fan, and everyone asks what do I think of the moves the yankees have made, and now adding Mark Teixeira. I'm honestly not mad at all. At 1st it was frustrating to see the Yankees upgrade their roster as much as they have this year, while the Red Sox major concern seemed to be only bringing back Jason Varitek.
The Red Sox are a very concervative team when it comes to spending money on free agents, especialy pitchers. They concentrate more on developing their own talent from the minors. Unlike The Yankees, they have made it very clear since the 200 season that they are trying to buy a world series. And it hasn't worked ever since they signed Giambi. Team owners are making all this fuss about the Yankees spending. It's their money. They do what is neeeded to bring in the best players. They play to win. Last season was the 1st time in several yrs that they decided not to spend a ton of money. They decided to go with their young pitchers, and it didn't work, and the fans were mad. All the yrs before that, they spent a ton of money on pitching and hitting, and it still didn't work, and the fans were mad. So what's all the fuss about?
It doesn't matter how good a team looks on paper. They still have to win. With the amount of money they have spent on Sabathia, Burnett and Teixeira, over $400 million, that just puts more added pressure for them to win it all. Making it to the world series isn't going to cut it. They have to win. team owners and other baseball fans can't get mad at the Yankees. You have to look at the players that sign with them. It seems like the players aren't interested in competing against the Yankees. They are playing to play for the Yankees instead. It's like, when their contract is up at the end of the season with their current team, they'll just go and sign with the Yankees. or if they can't get the amount of money that they want from another team, they'll just run to the Yankees. It's a sucker move. And that's what Sababthia did. He wanted to play for a team close to his California home. He met with the Yankees the 1st time to get the other teams to raise their offers, and when it didn't work, he took the easy way out and became a Yankee. But he can opt out after 3 yrs if he feels he doesn't wanna be their. If that was the team he really wanted to play for, he would've signed a long term deal. He's a sucker.
When it all comes down to it, the athletes are just plain greedy. Sababthia was still going to make alot of money with any team he signed with. It's sounds so stupid to hear these guys complaining about millions of dollars. You have regular working people who have to save a few pay checks just so they can go to a game and buy a hot dog and a beer for $85.

This example is the biggest reason why baseball NEEDS a salary cap. Thats a huge draw to football. Eventually, your team will be a winner. But in baseball, the Yankees will always be up there, the Red Sox, and so on. But teams like the Pirates and the Royals, they will most like never win a world series. If you're a 6 year old kid, how can you begin to love baseball when your hometown team has very little hope of winning. Which creates a baseball town that doesnt have any passion. A-Rod makes more than the entire Florida Marlins team. Come on. You cant tell me that that doesn't need to change.

By the time a good draft pick is fully developed a lower market team is bought out by a Yankees, Red Sox, or Cubs. For example, David Ortiz started as a Twin. Gary Sheffield started as a Brewer. Its not a coinsidence that these things happen. Its a vicious cycle.

Well I think they can only pay what the market will pay. As long as we keep going to games paying for the high price tickets they will keep buying players. The redsox are just as bad changing their uniforms to make more money. Heck I can`t get mad at the players if you offered any of us that kind of money we would be crazy not to take it.

This is just a wild guess I think it may have something to do with the fact they feel like a bunch of farm teams to the Yankees. That may have something to do with it and it's true you don't need to be the Yankees to win it all. The more money you have, the bigger the advantage is.

They are a good example of a team that has the lowest payroll in baseball and have made it to the world series. But the thing is that they have been loosing for the last 10 or more yrs, and as a result of it they get a lot of high draft picks. Their pay roll is so low because most of the guys on the team are still on their rookie contracts. I would really like to see if they can keep their payroll that low if they keep up with the success they had last year. If they are for real and they continue to be at the top of the division for years to come, I wonder how many of these guys are going to start demanding more money. If more fans start coming to the games, will they be pressured to spend money on big name free agents to keep themselves in competition with the Yankees and Boston. After all, the more fans that come to the games, the more money they will have to spend. This past season they were in 1st place and no one hardly showed up until they made the playoffs.
