Here's a video to prove that some do. This is filmed by one of my cat friends and posted on a message board with permission to share. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzEp6iT5hq4 Check out how handsome a cat Sparky is! Isn't he a clever boy? He's only about a year old. Enjoy!

It's so funny you brought this up. I was talking to my best friend last night on the phone and she has two cats. She said "I swear Rufus thinks he's a dog!" I asked why. She said, " He found a plastic ring off a the gallon of milk and he just dropped it in my lap. So I picked it up and tossed it back into the kitchen, he chased it down and just brought it back to me!" I have catsit for her cats on a few occasions and Rufus has done the same to me with his little stuffed cow toy. I'll throw it across the room and he'll run and get it and bring it back to me. I've seen a few cats do this but not many. The cat I had when I was a kid would do it with balls of aluminum foil I'd give her to play with. Cats are such cool little creatures!

One of the first kittens I ever placed turned out to kind of fetched. she'd go after little wads of paper but tended to only bring them back half way....

I know of a few cats who can fetch. Mine don't do it. Not a one of them.

I've had nearly 50 cats over the years and not a single fetcher myself.

I had a cat that did... would retrieve and even drop the ball to throw it again... I have yet to see another cat that did the same thing. Great video btw. Thanks Zelo

Cats are very... independant. Some will do what they want to do... very hard to train a cat. There was one on TV the other day that played the piano... the woman said she had three other cats and not only did they not play the piano... the other cats didn't even get along with the 'talented' one. Thanks Zelo

Rygel is the only one with a real trick, jumping in our arms, and he used to annoy the adult cats when he was a kitten, but all the younger cats adore him, because he was the good uncle to them.

I've seen and known a few cats that retrieve, but never been lucky enough to be owned by one.

Isn't that a clever boy? I have lots of cats who will chase what I toss for them, but returning them... nahhh.

One of my two cats will fetch. I'll throw her small soccer ball and she'll zooom after it, knock it around a bit and then bring it back to me in my chair so I can throw it again. We play every night. Now my other cat will have nothing to do with the game. She'll sit and watch the fun, but will not and has not ever fetched at all.

My brother had a cat for a while who fetched. He left her with his daughter, but she passed her on to her mother. Don't know if she still fetches, but then again, she's pushing 10 now.

I didn't know they fetched until the crazy lady that used to live across the street told me about this friend who's cat fetched. She had me drive her over one day and they showed me. It was cute. But she only fetched methol cigerette cellopane....

I don't think it so far fetched that a cat could learn to fetch. Cats are very intelligent animals. Most cats are just not interested in doing that. If you think about it you can also teach a cat to use the toilet in the house. I thought the video was pretty cool. Thanks for sharing that.

I know that cats fetch. Just do they have the interest and energy to do so. The guy has another cat, but that cat went and hid as soon as he pulled out his camera.

I love watching cats fetch. I've had a few Siamese that would fetch and bring back the item you threw. One would retrieve socks (one drawback, she also would steal socks from the laundry!!! LOL) Then I had another that would retrieve and give you little foam balls. It depended on what the cat really liked to play with. Cats may be independent, but they do love to make their owners happy at times. Loved the video too, he sure is a handsome fellow!

A couple of my parents' cats have been 'fetchers', behaving more like dogs than cats. It certainly makes life more lazy when you are playing with them, as you don't have to keep getting up in order to retreive the toy!

I think Rygel might've been a fetcher if we had been the kind to throw the toys for him....

What a great cat!! So much enthusiasm and joy at returning his catch to his master. And, I love the condo - I would love to have something like that for my two monsters!! Right now, my Shady has taken to lying under the Christmas tree the way she used to lie under the lilac bush out front all summer. Must be something of a security blanket for her. Neither cat tries to climb trees. But, a condo, I suspect would entice climbing - especially since Chloe loves being up on the table and windowsill. Thanks for sharing that video. Love watching kittehs having fun!!

I love Sparky! I have two cats and neither one of them fetches; only occasionally one of them will retrieve an object and bring it back to me. My friend has a Siamese who fetches all the time. One of my cats is dog like when he walks with a lead and the other -I know this sounds silly- I swear tries to communicate with me vocally, she makes different sounds for different things and if I walk in the room she will actually tilt her head and acknowledge me with a funny little sound. A lot of people think that cats are not as smart as dogs but I disagree. I have a dog also and the three of them surprise me every day, they are pretty clever!

My cats make lots of sounds, but then again, I have a lot of cats with some Siamese in them too... Oliver, tho, doesn't really, but he was raised by Rygel who, while he doesn't look like one, acts a lot like one, and for a non-Saimese, Oliver has a lot of little noisy traits of one. Cats are certainly as clever as a dog, maybe more so, but they are less driven to please anyone but themselves because they aren't a pack animal. House cats are more social than any other breed of cat besides a lion, but that's in part because they were forced together. Like the lion, intact cats tend to socialize mother and daughters or sisters, often helping raise one another kittens while the other goes hunting.

Interesting information. I love cats; I always have from childhood. They are such beautiful animals with such pride and grace. I think I will always own a cat or two in my life.

Sparky is indeed a clever and handsome boy. I had a cat that would fetch, too. Unfortunately I don't have any film to prove it, just the story. Every morning I would wake up with a pounding headache. So, the first thing I would do is get a soda and two BC powders and sit in my recliner. When I took the powders I would ball up the papers they came in to throw them away. Every morning Smokey would sit at my feet as if I was opening him a treat. So one morning I threw the balled up papers on the floor to see what he would do. He attacked them with a vengeance and after thoroughly trouncing them he brought them back to me to throw again. It instantly became a morning ritual for us and when my doctor finally prescribed medication for the headaches I had to find a similar material to throw for Smokey each morning.

Ahhh, another BC powder fan! I used to take 3 after eating breakfast and another 3 after lunch. I wouldn't have dreamed giving them to my cats since asprin is so bad for them... What did you find to throw for Smokey?

I didn't actually give him the BC's just the papers they came in. When I didn't have any which was seldom, because I rarely had enough prescription meds to take care of my headaches, I would tear a small piece of waxed paper up and wad it up for him. It was almost the same and he didn't seem to know the difference.

That is too cute! Sparky is awesome! I really loved the way he would catch the mouse in his paws. I think he needs to come to my house and give my cats a few lessons on fetch. Mine only play 'one way fetch'. LOL! Thanks for sharing that hon.

He takes good direction from his dad doesn't he! His dad did a photo retrospective of him growing up. We also got to hear his story. He was one of 3 left in a litter and he asked for the most outgoing one of the bunch. Well, he got a talented fellow didn't he.

That is a cute video of Sparky. My cat Corvette love to play fetch with super balls. I throw it to him and he always brings it back in his little mouth, right to me. We keep playing sometimes for 10 or more throws.

I've never had a retieving cat, but that might be because I want them to be "self-entertaining" rather than depending on me for entertainment.

I think some cats will fetch particularly if they live with dogs and get to observe that behavior. My cat will go after something if I throw it sometimes but he has never brought it back to me. I think I might be able to get him to do that though because he aims to please, unlike alot of cats.

My brother had a cat that retrieved golf tees. My mom said she'd sit and throw the golf tee over and over until she was tired, the cat never wore out. That was back when Allie was a kitten/young cat tho.

ABSOLUTELY! I have had a few cats who played fetch, and one that we taught to jump through a hoop from one pedestal to another, just like a circus lion or tiger!

Wow! that's cool. I guess I'm not willing to work that hard to make my cat do tricks. Rygel taught himself to jump into our arms, trust me, that probably wouldn't have been my idea of a good trick to learn...

We breed Pixiebobs, a rather rare breed of cats. At the present time we have 9, 3 of which are for sale and the others are our breeding and show stock. Anyway, most Pixiebobs fetch. The also like to walk on a leash and will come when you call their names. We breeders like to say they're the cat that thinks it's a dog. They are cute tabbies who are born (usually) with a bob tail and many of them have extra toes.

I've heard that about other cat breeds too. I, for one, don't want my cats to act like dogs, if I wanted a dog, I'd get one. I did, in fact, have a very dog like cat once, that cat had some cat haters like her. She was a rather odd cat.
