I got lot of international freinds, and they often ask me, why do hindus dont eat cow's meat (beef). They told me that its very tasty. I told them that most of the hindus are vegetarians, and they dont eat any type of meat. However, even if they have non veg, they might still not eat beef, as cow is considered as a sacred animal for hindus. Then they also ask why is that so?
I am not sure about why exactly hindus cosdiere cow sacred, probably because India's heart in in village, and cow (not only cow - bull, and buffallo too)plyas a very important role in making a living of farmers. Plus cow, and other animals also have some mythological significance.
However, as I see it, it has something to do with hindu culture. I think, india is the only country where you find more pure vegetarians than non veggies. The roots are like that i guess..
As for the title of this thread, that was just help some peoples understading about love. I am sure most of the people readin this thread are non vegetarians, but I am equally sure, that a very high majority of them would reply negative.
Do you know why I asked that question? And do you know why you wont eat a dog's or cat's meat, even even if you eat chicken, mutton, pork or beef ?
;)

I understand what you're saying... I don't know many people that would eat dog or cat, so it makes sense that there is a certain animal (cows) that Hindus don't eat either.
I think our lives, influences, cultures, etc. all lead us to develop the rights and wrongs when it comes to killing and consuming animals.
A personal example I have is that (aside from my refusal to eat any house-pet like a dog or cat) I absolutely refuse to eat Lamb (sheep, mutton). The reason I fell so strongly is that I had lambs as pets when I was younger.... They were my friends, I cared for them, walked them, groomed them and showed them at the fair. That was over 20 years ago, and even though lamb is supposedly tasty and one of those 'finer' meat dishes, I absolutely cannot bring myself to eat it, or even look at it on someone else's plate!
With that said, doesn't India eat a lot of lamb? Seems like the authentic Indian restaurant here serves a lot of it! I'll eat the rice and chicken they serve, but there's no way I would touch the lamb!!!

As I see its not about being selective in eating non veg, vegetarianism is not merely an eating habit, its a lifestyle. I think http://creativeurja.com/?p=21
