Hello Gadhisunu,
From what I can see there are two conditions. First, the best things in life are free. The second one, these days there are no free lunches.
Will look into the first one, things that we enjoy in life, such as the company of friends, the warmth of a lover, or the appreciation of beauty are just of the "things" we may consider best in life. unsurpassed by material wealth. then there are those "other" things such as freedom of speech, expression, or religion. Basically the Declaration of human rights. those are the things we should enjoy! not only because these things are free, as was mentioned, "human rights."
Yet, somehow, the second statement, contradicts. As if stating that we can never enjoy life without purchasing happiness. WE have become common traders. I want happiness, therefore I will purchase it from the market. Material things are paid for. Food. Companionship. And some rights are even bought.
Very stimulating discussion and I will be expecting your comment my friend.
Cheers!

Hi,Zorlone,
Both statements do contradict each other.Yet they are "both" true in their own "Universes". Here I am alluding to the Univesal Set of the Set theory. If you consider that this reward for this person is for this purpose then you are in the No Free Lunches Universes. If you want to derive your oown happiness from the happiness of another tghen you are in the "Best Things(Leading to Happines) are Free" Universe . Ain't it?

I think, if lunch would have been free for everyone on this earth, then our worldly problems would have diminished to a great extent! But this does not happen and so we can realize the truth in a revised manner as, "The best things in life are not always free, they also posses their own money value!" Thanks for this nice topic and have a good day!

Mitaa, why, lunches must have been free in good ol' days when people bartered for exchanges. It was only after the concept of money emerged and we had purses to keep them in that we started to tighten our purse strings; we learned to frown on the occasional visitor at our doorstep, giving rise to the new adage. True if only hunger is eliminated there must be less strife.wars in the world. But friend even mankind has moved quite far from food being the main concern in life!

^_^ Howdy!.... GADHISUNU!....
As free as a flying bird but humans cannot fly for free so pay the pilot to fly on an airplane.... lol....
In Windows. It is not free. If you want more functionalities and stabilities you pay more money and headaches.... lol.... In Linux especially Ubuntu it is absolutely free of charge. Has all the functionalities needed or wanted and it is more stabilities and secured. The charges are only your time, patience, effort and glory.... har har har har.....
^_^ Thanks!.... and Enjoy!.... myLot!....

That was a way-out suggestion for the question. But does make lot of sense. You have stepped out of the box for picking things that could be called free! Ha Ha!

the best things in life are free... hmmm it's true but not entirely true.. i always depends on one's definition of "BEST THINGS".. and opportunity costs cannot be elimnated.. hehehe

the best things are always those things that lay deep track on your heart, whether free or things you need to fight for, like u r born to enjoy the richful love from u endeared parents, they r free, yet no one can deny that they top on many things.for some other things, the tough exprience to gain it always impresses ur mind.

yea...many things, trivial or big...it can go to the extend that is so big like ur one-time-in-life wedding ceremony, but aslo can dive into the smallness like there being one girl sending u a flash of smile...when the trivial happiness being linked together, they re gonna be a good memory show as a live movie...how u think

There are many people that are materialistic in nature and "free" to them means anything and everything. It doesn't matter if they are the richest people on this Earth. They just can't stand to see someone get anymore than they do or already have.
For me personally, if I have the opportunity to receive something free, I stop and ask myself do I really need this or am I really eligible? What will "free" cost me in the end? Everything has consequences, even free things.

DCM, things that have a materialist value coming free- and you stop to think whether you deserve that is high morality no doubt. Just assume that you got something free but it cost anything to anyone, but made a difference to your life would you not take it? I was asking for a list of such "things". Do you think there is not one thig that is not material but very much wanted?

The best things in life are the most precious and this saying is to bring some prospective to what's really important. The best things in my life definitely ARE free...the smiles of my grandchildren, my husband's laugh, my little dog's silly, happy personality and her deep devotion to me. The peace of mind I have in my life now is something money couldn't buy...in fact the opposite was true. When I was up north, earning twice the money and living in a larger house, I was stressed and unhappy. No amount of money would have made that lifestyle more enjoyable to me.

That is quite revealing spalladino. This one new thing. The love a pet gives! But one might it is also "bought" in some sense, by giving it a loving care. But then it is true that in the world of pets the yellow metal hasn't entered, as a measure of "value" so one can safely say the pet's love- in your case your dog - is for free. That was a very nice from the heart response.

Relationships, family and friends? That's fine! Aha! there is a new addition: Health.
You are absolutely sure you need not have to invest anything for Good Health? How about the need to eat good food. That costs. Doesn't it?

Ourfff, you have somehow latched on to what is not free, my emphasis what comes free. This statement is a profound one. Please reflect on it and offer your valued observations. The purpose of putting this up, for discussion was to see if there are any non-traditional answers.

Things like friendship ,love ,family are things that you dont have to and couldnot pay for ,yet there are most important thing in life.Nothings mean more than to know that you have people who will always be there for you through thick and thin. That is what these people represent to you

You should reflect on what are the best things in life. For me, I'm most happy and grateful for the time I spend with my friends and family, and indeed, their love, laugh, friendship, support, thoughtfulness,... are completely free and given whole-hearted. That's the most valuable in my life, yet free! That's what's meant with this saying.
