hmm i bet 2009 is going to bring some games with massive requirements to the market(Like GTA IV did at the end of 2008). So the best configuration would probably be:
Processor: i7 965 Extreme Edition
Graphics card: 3x(or more) Nvidia GTX 280 connected via SLI
RAM: 16 GB
HDD: 1 TB
Sound card: umm something from creative i suppose...
Misc: Ageia physX
This configuration will run most of the games with maximum graphics for maximum pleasure...
P.S buying a computer like this is not cheap. And when you buy it you will find that the entire neighbourhood will come to your place to play awesome computer games.(And you can charge them money per hour(like 10 bucks) then the computer will become profitable!)

For gaming, you need lots of ram, a good graphics card, fast processor, and a good soundcard just to hear the subtle sound of that blade cutting through flesh.
And a good cooling system is important too. There are liquid cooling systems available which do a pretty good job at reducing pc heat.
enjoy your gaming.
