We have been hearing news about many people being laid off from their jobs across the globe. These people must have been in a dismal situation. I didn't had any direct contact with any such person until recently when I came to know about one who lives in our campus. His son was working in US, having a very good job. He(son)lost his job and the worst was that this man lost good amount of money in stocks. Now he has lost balance of his brain. Society authorities are co-operating with him as he is unable to pay his monthly maintanence charges. I hope his son gets a job soon to come out of the ordeal this family has been going through. Do you know about any such person, your friend, relative or acquaintence, who has been effected by this lay-off?How is he/she fighting with the situation?

wow, that sure is tough. i am actually a part of those who have been laid off this year. actually, i am a freelancer but i have regular clients. i have been working for a great company for quite some time now but because of the recession, they have stopped working with me. it has really affected my business to the point that i am actually on a job hunt now and plan to go back to the traditional work force. I haven't been lucky with the hunt yet but hopefully, i will be successful this coming 2009! I really wish that things will be better for all of us

My dad was laid off back in June. He has been working since the age of 15 and in all that time he has had not more than a week off sick. He was out everyday looking for a job even tho he applied for many he only ended up with one interview and they could not even bother to contact him to tell him if he got the job or not. He didn't get it. After about three months of looking for a job he decided that he is now officially retired as no one wanted to employ him. He hates having to claim from the state as he is a proud man and has never ever claimed before. He finds it very boring he does not know what to do with himself as before this the longest he was ever out of work was for just a week. He now does some volunteer work but they only need someone once a week so he is at a loose end at what to do with himself the rest of the time. The one good thing to come out of this is that me, my partner and our children now get to see him more often as he will often pop in for a cuppa.

I can understand your dad's situation as from years he was into the habit of working hard but all of a sudden, which he must have least expected, was laid off; must have been really disheartening for him. In a way retired life is good but one needs an alternate occupation to keep going.

Comfort, I know so many of these people, it's appalling. Many myLotters are in this position, too. Several people I know have been demoted in order to be able to keep a job, but at a lower salary. If the rest of us think it can't happen tous, we're just totally wrong! One friend of mine is working at three part-time jobs and picking up every nickle she can on computer sites. I can't imagine when she sleeps! She hasn't been able to find anything full-time since her company went out of business after she'd worked there for more than 20 years. One of my students is working insane hours at a grocery store because both of his parents were working for the same company, which went out of business at Thanksgiving time. We all need help!

Yes cobrateacher, I am also hearing the news about the repercussions of layoffs from my acquaintences here and there. Most of them are in a bad shape. I wish and pray that the year 2009 bring them respite from this situation.

I am in this situation, I was laid off from my job in June. Since the job marketing is at an all time low, it is really hard to find another one. I take one day at a time, some days I am depressed, other days, like today I am okay. I have been collecting unemployment, but it is not enough to cover my expenses, although it does help. I have adjusted by not going places that I really do not have to be, I have not bought myself anything at all, I am making do with what I have. My shoes are falling apart, but the money I would spend on new shoes, I could pay my electric bill with or buy a little food. I am very grateful to my church and my mother, because they have helped me out a little with food. I am just praying for a change in my situation, and am hopeful that it won't last much longer.

I can understand your situation sudalunts as I had also gone through extreme financial crunch due to our business failure. I'll say that faith in God only helps in these situations. If He closes one door, other door He certainly opens. Rough times seem to be very long, but remember there's always an end to a tunnel. You'll certainly come out of it very soon with Almighty's Blessings.

Yes. Two years ago, one of the young ladies who works for me had a baby and decided to stay home with her children and work for us on a part time basis. On 12/18, just a week before Christmas, her husband was laid off from his job. He had been with the company for almost 19 years. Fortunately, we were able to find a way to bring her back full time but while the extra money is helpful, it doesn't replace his income. Unemployment insurance helps out but the job market here is not very good and since they are a young couple with three children, they don't have a lot of savings to fall back on. Both of them are quite depressed. They took back all of the gifts that they bought for their children and everyone in our office bought gifts so that the children would have something to open on Christmas day.

To sustain, laid off people are forced to do part time jobs, many are doing three in a day. May they come out soon of this horrible situation.

hello comfort55, I am working in an international semi-conductor company for more than twenty years. When the company sent me and my family abroad to work for two years there, the company laid-off some employees due to minimal demand from our customers. Just last month, the company laid off like 40% of it's employees with the same reason. But this time it's even worst for it trippled the number of employees that were laid-off. Some volunteered because they're planning to put up their own business. The economy worldwide is so alarming that we need to tighten our belt even more. For all of us is a survivor. Nobody knows what will happen next. Even a big and stable companies are having the same problem. Only few are really spending. If this will continue, what will happen to the business world?

I agree with you Robert. Itwas shocking news that many big companies which had been established since last 100-150 years, had survived through all ups and downs over the years, crumbled down in this worst economic recession. Yes, nobody is safe now, but the predictions I've been hearing from all over are that year 2009 will bring fresh employment opportunities. I hope this will become true and with that bring happiness to many many people. Good luck!

2008 was no doubt very bad for the economic recession. This is the worst ever we have seen in our life. But there is ray of hope as astrologers are predicting 2009 as the year of many job opportunities. Hopefully it comes true!

Thankfully, none of my friends have been laid off. I think it's a matter of being productive and being good at what you do. Because if you're a great individual, chances are you won't be fired at all. That's just my philosophy though, I haven't started working yet so I don't know how cut throat it can be in the corporate world.

I was let go from my company in November. I decided to go back to school and I take my classes at night just in case I am able to find another job. So far, no such luck. I look in the paper and at the online job boards and it appears that I may have to relocate to another state if I want to get another job! I haven't lost my marbles yet, but I am getting a little concerned. I have never been out of work any length of time that I didn't choose. There are just a very limited number of jobs out there. Another discouraging factor is when you open your email box and you get 5 or 6 bogus job offers saying that you can work from home.
