When you first feel the "quickening" (a synonym for "coming to life"), it feels like a feather tickling inside you. That could be kicking or arm movements or the baby just moving its entire body. I don't know. But, believe me - when you get kicked, you WILL know. My son hardly moved - in fact, I had the doctor check just to make sure I hadn't lost him. But, my daughter was an Olympic gymnast. I looked literally like I was an impregnated character from "Alien". My belly would rise and fall and follow her every movement. It was really freaky! And, when she was head down and started kicking my ribs.....let me tell you, that girl was NOT happy she didn't have room, believe me. And, it was true AFTER birth, too. She was and has been in constant motion ever since! The only way I can describe the feeling is that it feels like someone inside trying to get out. It really does. It's a very unique sensation, depending on what they push on. It's just very weird. Not frightening - just weird.

You will feel fluttering at first when the baby starts kicking. It feels like bubbles in your stomach. Then 4 in half to 5 months the baby will kick a lot harder. Iy will make your stomach rise and make waves in your stomach.

You may be feeling some slight movement, but you will know when its a kick. I was told i wouldn't feel kicks untill i was at least 18 weeks. I was thirteen weeks when i was just sitting there. I was looking at my stomach wondering when i would feel a kick. It was like he knew and he kicked. Right in my lower abdomen. I jumped when it happened. I was real excited.

I am currently 38 weeks pregnant. This is my first pregnancy and like you i had the same question,. " How do you know when the baby kicks" and like the first comment you WILL just know its really as simple as that to be honest cause for everyone it feels different. When i first felt my son i had just gotten done taking a shower and was laying on my side on my bed just watching tv when i thought that i felt something not sure of what the heck it was i put my hand on my stomach and waited for about 10 minutes and sure enough he kicked me pretty hard to where i knew instantly what it was. But like i said everyone is different and you will feel it differently but one this is sure when it does happen you WILL know. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy mine is almost over... by the way make sure you get plenty of rest and drink lots of water. And once you know what the feeling is of your baby kicking there are easy ways to make him or her kick, drinking ice water or eating are both good ways.
