Whatever Happened To A Sense Of Responsibility?

No offense to the Filipino community here, but I am just appalled at this news and of all the place to be actually happening the AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TOWER!! of an airport.
The article actually disclosed how FIVE air traffic controllers who were late or absent from work a day after Christmas were suspended after two flights were forced to circle a southern airport because no one was manning the control tower, Philippine civil aviation officials said on Saturday.
Yes, 2 flights were affected. Fortunately?
1. A Philippine Airlines jet from Manila with 156 passengers arrived early on Friday morning at Zamboanga city's airport but was forced to circle for nearly 30 minutes before being allowed to land.
2. A smaller, Cebu Pacific airline turbo plane from Cebu city that arrived minutes ahead of the PAL flight had to land on its own!!
TWO flights amounting to a possible 3 figure fatal casualty count!
Initial findings by the airport manager were: 2 of the controllers were absent without notice on Friday, 2 came in late, and 1 had filed a leave approved by her supervisor, but the notice did not reach the airport administration office.
What really had me boiling was this statement in the article: "The tardy air controllers explained they had difficulty getting a ride to work because public transportation was scarce the day after Christmas. But Mr Celso Bayabos (Zamboanga airport manager) said they were apparently still in holiday mode."
How could they be so irresponsible and the manager be so casual with his statements? Doesn't all of them have any decent sense of responsibility here? After this, I am really having a very bad after taste for Filipino authorities. Really! This is simply just awful. I felt that the whole chain of command here should be SACKED - starting from the Duty Officers and controllers for both the shift before and actual shifts. What's your take here? Should all of them be charged as well other than a simple pathetic suspension?

I'm from Zamboanga City myself and I'm just i'm not one of those who waited 30 minutes above air. I just arrived from Manila 2 weeks and good thing nothing like that happened to me because i have this slight anxiety when boarding a plane. That's how it is here in our Airport. I don't know if Mr. Bayabos and company already patched up the potholes in the runway. For God's sake they should be aware that most accidents come from flat tires. They all complain about the funds but i think it's pretty cheap to fill asphalt than coffins.

modstar,
Well, I am just glad that you weren't in any of the flights mentioned here.
I just cannot believe and put up with such excuses, and my same sentiments on the maintenance issue. Potholes on the runway?!! Wow! What funds are they talking about when such repairs are MANDATORY!!?
The whole airport management is really a joke here.

My! My! What have we here? And the authorities I supposed are conveniently out of mind and out of sight!!
These are certainly the things that bring a country to disrepute.

They should not file a leave of absence all at once. That created the problem. I wonder if the supervisor or manager knew this to come. It is a scary thing because what if some bad people would know this thing and overtake the control tower. I hope the people with the right authority would clearly investigate and look into this. They should not wait that something worse will happen. What kind of discipline would you consider yourself for such negligence?

hibiscus_mel,
There was only one leave applicant here in this case and the application did not get to the head office. Would you believe it?
The worst thing is the shift before could abandon their post before the other shift arrives; and that the replacement shift could be half an hour late. What would you call this? I do not mind if this is a normal commercial office but an air traffic control office where hundreds to thousands of lives and expensive transportation equipments are at stake.
There is always this thing called conscientiousness and that is exactly what makes us different from animals. This is a civil office not a circus. As for the law, I think they should be sentenced for life. Then, they will not have to be punctual in their cell life.
Cheers.

"After this, I am really having a very bad after taste for Filipino authorities. " - Well, I just wanna say that not every Filipino authority is like that. So I hope you won't generalize everyone by one incident. Cause not everyone is like that.
have a great day.

donsky14,
I have experienced with a couple of them in my course of work and travels and this is just the one of them where I simply cannot understand just how these people could ever have held office in the first place.
I do not and would not want to generalize but I just cannot help putting a mention here.
Thanks for your response and reminder that there are still some good apples in the barrel.

tabachi,
As much as I hate to say this, but it is true.
I just hope that these people will never be hired again at least not in the aviation industry where so much lives are at stake.
I just cannot say just what is actually going through their minds here.
