There's definitely a step between best friend and acquaintance. Your "best friend" is the first person you tell when something important happens, good or bad. They are one who calls you when something happens to them. They are the one who gets custody of your kids in your will and who calls your parents Mom and Dad. Friends are the people you call when you want someone to go out to dinner or coffee with or when you need a ride to pick up your car from the mechanic. They are the people you go out with for drinks after a long day at work. Acquaintances are someone you say hello to in line at the grocery store or have a drink with if you are already out when you see them. You don't call them for anything or invite them anywhere but you are kind and cordial to them when you do see them. They are also not offended if you ignore them at the grocery store or the bar because you aren't really friends. Or: A friend is the person you call to bail you out of jail. A best friend is sitting next to you in the cell, saying "D@amn, that was fun!" A friend brings you coffee and Aspirin when you have a hangover. A best friend is sleeping theirs off on your bathroom floor. A friend asks before taking anything from your refrigerator. A best friend is the reason you have no food. A friend will borrow your favorite sweater, wash it and return it promptly. A best friend can't remember what's theirs and what's yours. A friend has to ask if something is wrong. A best friend just shows up at your house with ice cream and buddy flicks.
