Were you Mamma Mia'd this Christmas?

Did you get Mamma Mia (the movie) as a Christmas gift for yourself or for someone you know?
It seems like every household now has this movie. Am I wrong to assume that most mothers and older women got these as gifts?
I just finished watching it, by the way.

No, I did not get Mamma Mia for Christmas this year, but that's OK. I saw it with a friend at the theater the first weekend it came out.
It's probably just as well--I don't know if hubby or my kids would enjoy it in quite the same way as I did. It is definitely a chick flick. Even though my husband likes the music of ABBA as much as I do, I think he would find some of the song and dance sequences to be rather cringeworthy. And somehow the charms of Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan would be lost on him (they certainly weren't lost on me!).
I will buy it for myself sometime in the future. I can rewatch it when I have friends over or on the rare night I have the TV to myself. But this Christmas, the big movie in our household was Kung Fu Panda.

Hmmm. The movie basically has 5 strikes against it in my book... I do not like the title of the movie, I am not into Pierce Brosnan, I have NEVER been into ABBA, I do not care for musicals at all, and I am not big on 'chick flicks' either. But I LOVE Meryl Streep, and would watch it just because she's in it. Why is anybody wondering if she can sing?! She sang in 'Postcards from the Edge' and did a fantastic job! Her singing 'Heartbreak Hotel' is definitely one of my movie watching highlights, hehehe.

I agree with you, SaintAnne--Pierce Brosnan was just as charming as ever in this one. Yes, it's true, he really doesn't have the voice for singing. But he takes his shirt off at the end of the movie so I'm more than willing to forgive him.
And Colin Firth was the ultimate Mr. Darcy...I love him too!
To me, this movie has so much going for it that I found it easy to lose myself in the story. Sure it was campy...what else can you say about a movie that includes a dance sequence featuring divers tap dancing on the pier in flippers? But then, most musicals are campy by nature. That's part of the fun!

LOL. I just love Colin Firth ever since his Darcy days in Pride and Prejudice.
I got Kung Fu Panda so I guess I should have gone with that one for this discussion. So far, those who have responded haven't gotten it so that totally goes against what I assumed.
Ziggy, I think Streep sang in A Prairie Home Companion as well. And Pierce Brosnan was great-looking on this one (though as my sister says, he's the one with the worst voice among the cast). I didn't see him in his Bond films but I could watch The Thomas Crown Affair over and over and over again.

I never heard of the movie. But I don't even like the phrase 'mamma mia' so it's pretty much guaranteed I wouldn't like the movie! Glad nobody gave it to me, hehehe.
I received a lot of wonderful gifts though! I hope you did too!

Christmas loot! That describes EXACTLY how I feel about it! Every now and then I go over to the chest and dip my hands in it and watch the sparkly gems drip through my fingers, hehehehe.

Ziggy, Wordplay pretty much explained it for you. Yes, I wanted to catch Mamma Mia on Broadway. I think it would been way way better than the movie. Thanks you too.
PS - My Christmas loot, as I call it, made me happy.

I took the girls 8 &9 yrs old to see it,They loved it so much we had to go back to see the karaoke version, They loved it, they bought the cd which I have to say i'm sick of listening to,It's on in the house and the car all day long, then they got the dvd, It's watched nearly daily, if not by them by their little Brother (3) who loves the money money song......only he thinks its honey honey :), For my 8yr old's birthday we did a disco party in the house spent hours doing a "cool" selection of music on the pc.....and all they listened to for over 3 hours was Mamma mia.
So it's very much loved in this house...by the Children...less so by myself....and even less by my partner :).

LOL. Poor design. At least you find joy in seeing your kids really happy. My mom has the ABBA cd in her car and I am pretty sure it is almost always playing as well.
Thanks for the response.

Oh God help me! I put off seeing this movie for months, but in the end I caved in like a landslide and downloaded it so my Wife and I could watch it. I am still on undecided as to whether I preferred Mamma Mia, or watching the paint on a fence dry. At this moment in time, I'm leaning towards the fence. Pierce Brosnan should NOT be singing!

How about some dancing painters singing Mamma Mia while you watch the paint on the fence dry, James?
I have never seen any James Bond movie until the first one with Daniel Craig on it. I love Thomas Crown Affair with Pierce Brosnan in it.

Well, it was an okay movie. I mean the music just makes you, of course, want to sing along.
Hope it makes its way to your town, LadyM.

I took my girls to see it in the cinema, They loved it so much that we went to see the karaoke version, they loved it..They were up dancing.
They bought the cd, which I have to say i'm sick of listening to ...It's on morning and night...in the house and the car,Then they got the dvd, surprised it still plays as it's on every day too, if not by them by their little brother (3),
He loves the money money song, he argues thats it honey honey .....
My Daughters 8th birthday party was a disco party in the house, I spent hours arranging music on the pc to suit them...and you got it...they only listened to Mamma Mia...over 3 hours of it :)
And at Christmas we went to see their talent show in school...you guessed it..It was mamma mia ...(by everyone nearly the whole school did mamma mia in some shape or form, from singing to dancing)...but they were great.
So it's a big hit here..from the Children anyhow....little less by me ...and a lot less by my partner :)

I'm a mother and I guess I'd qualify as an "older woman" at age 56 but I must bein the minority because I did NOT receive this movie as a Christmas gift. I haven't seen Mama Mia but I'd like to and will get around to it eventually. It seems to be a very upbeat, "feel-good" kind of movie and I think we could all use some of that these days.

Well, it seems like I am in the wrong here, anniepa. Most of my respondents have not gotten them or seen them so my assumption there was shot down.
Well, I hope the movie makes you feel good and upbeat whenever you get to see it. Thanks for sharing, anniepa.

It was okay. I enjoyed it but not as some people really loved it. I'm used to watching movies with people singing and sudden choreographed dancing occurs. I like Colin Firth, the setting and the music. I grew up to ABBA music so I'm a bit biased.

I've been meaning to see this but keep forgetting about it every time a movie run is proposed.
Part of that might come from the fact that usually the people I watch films with aren't musical people. :P (Most of the people I know aren't, it was a struggle to get my boyfriend to watch Sweeney Todd with me, and that was even rather dark, plus it featured Helena Bonham Carter & Johnny Depp... basically what I'm trying to say is, it's not your average musical. :P)

I didn't get to see Sweeney Todd. I don't even know why I missed that one as I'm one to catch Johnny Depp movies.
Yes, people have to get over the whole "musical" deal to not leave while watching this movie.
Thanks, CheshireKat.
