how can i prevent spam mails coming to my gmail?

i have been using gmail account since a couple of years i found that recently there are lot of spams coming to me its irritating and i want to get away from lot of those fraud mails as soon as i delete all the spam the next hour i find another hundred spams entering my mails.
most of the mails are obscene and i want to prevent it
can anyone help me out?

i think the best way is to no to have out your gmail address to any unreliable site and any company. i have about three different emaill addresses i only use one of them to give to reliable sources. the others i use to give to thing when i sign up or some thing. its easyer that way i never get spams or junk emails.
but if you do get it and its from the same person juts block them!
