What do yo do with your Christmas Tree?...

During Christmas... we Filipinos decorate our homes with a fake Christmas tree... mainly because there are no real Christmas trees available... and that they are available in different sizes, shapes, and prices... i remember the 6 foot Christmas tree we used for more than 15 years... and it certainly served it's purpose...
For those who are using the real Christmas tree... what do you do with it when Christmas is over?... just curious because if you just throw it away... then that would be such a waste... and if you recycle it... then how?...
Just curious...

When I lived in Maryland there were special pick ups for Christmas trees so that they could be recycled but we have a different kind of recycling down here in my neighborhood in Florida. We have a nephew who lives across the canal from us and he usually has a New Year's Eve party, which is held outside (because it's warm here) and will include a large bon fire consisting of everyone's used Christmas trees. My son-in-law nextdoor has already taken their over and my husband will take ours as soon as we take it down...which will be today or tomorrow. By New Year's Eve they will have about 20 trees over there, which will burn brightly but won't last long.

Wow... like a neighborhood party... that sound like a nice tradition... and everybody contributes to the bonfire or the whole party atmosphere by donating used christmas trees... well that is better than just throwing away the trees...
Thanks for the response...

we haven't used a real Christmas tree. I hope we could have one coz I guess its nice to feel the Christmas with a real tree and with the kids helping to decorate one.
But that would be one concern, on what to do with it after the Christmas season...

We Filipinos have little knowledge about how to get rid or recycle real trees... so it is a good thing most or almost all of use use artificial ones... and we use that for a good number of years... more earth friendly... and less expensive...
Thanks for the response...

We use a plastic christmas ree that can be used over and over again. When it is over we just pack it and store it for the coming year. i am against of using real trees due to environement reasons.

I am also using a fake Christmas tree this Christmas. But what I know from others here who are using real tree is that, they throw it away. There are lots of real trees sold every year in the place where I am now. There is a big plantation of
Real Christmas tree here. In different height and sizes so, there is no problem if they keep on throwing their trees after using. they can not use it for the next year anyway, so they have to throw it away.

Well, just throwing the use real tree is so not environmental friendly... i hope more and more people would resort to recycling them... i feel so sorry for the trees because they are just discarded after being used...

We used to have a real tree before and it shed all over the place. Sure, the house smelled like pine and it was really fragrant, but you can see the pine needles falling off into the carpet! Anyway, after Christmas, we just threw the tree in the trash and the garbage collectors would recycle it for us, I think. You can also chop it up and use it for firewood. :)

Good thing the garbage collectors were kind enough to recycle the trees... i can just imagine if that was in my country... some would even be willing to buy the used tree to be used as firewood or even for carving...

I don't think real Christmas trees can be recycled and I think they have to pick it fresh near Christmas because it doesn't really last that long. I also think it's much more cheaper than plastic trees - or at least that's what I see in the movies :D
Thanks for the comment on my discussion!

Anything can be recycled... even used Christmas trees... some people use them as firewood... or even to decorate the garden... i don't really know if they are cheaper since real Christmas trees are never sold in my country...

this is my first yr. with a fake, so when we had our real ones, we would put them on the curb during garbage days after new yrs. and the garbage man would pick them up. i love not having to deal with the mess of a real one, and just putting away my fake one when i want.

We have using the same tree for 20 years and it still look fabulous every year. We decorate it in so many different ways. We love our Christmas tree. It has a sentimental value to us. It was a gift to my mom from her closest friend.
It is very seldom that I see a real tree for Christmas in the Philippines. I can still remember that there was a row of Christmas trees in the South part of Luzon for sale. But, that was 10 years ago.
After the Christmas season real trees can be composted.

Or they can be turned into firewood... or even something to decorate the garden... i don't think i would ever experience a Christmas with a real Christmas tree... but i am pretty content with the artificial one... since they are equally as nice...

We have a small Christmas tree, I think three feet only. It is a white Christmas tree. We have been using it for almost 10 years already I guess.
It is pretty obvious that we have recycled the Christmas tree. It really has a sentimental value to us, so we don't want to throw it away.
Since it is small and its parts are removable, we can easily place it in a small plastic bag to restore it for future use. :-)

A white artificial Christmas tree... those are not very common in Filipino houses... i only see them in malls or offices... but i guess if it has sentimental value... that is all that counts...
Thanks for the response... and nice to see you again...

I use to put up real trees for Christmas. When the kids grew up and moved on out, I didn't see any reason to buy a real tree. As much as I really don't like artificial trees, I went ahead and bought one. I miss the smell of a fresh pine or balsam, but I don't miss the falling needles, vacuuming everyday, watering the tree or chasing the cat out of it, and I really don't miss hauling it out to the curb for pick-up.

Well, my mother replaced our old artificial tree this year... she said she really did not want to put up a new one... but because she wanted to make her granddaughters feel the christmas spirit... she bought a big one at the mall and asked my sister to decorate it... and my niece and daughter were very happy about that...

Some people use it for firewood and others as mulch... although i do not know what a mulch is... but recycling is certainly a lot better than just throwing it away...
Thanks for the response... welcome to mylot and i hope you enjoy every minute of your stay here...

It has been a long time since we have had a real tree. We have been using a fake one for the last few years. When we had one we lived in town. We would just take it outside when we were done with it and burn it. We lived in a small town so that was ok. When I still lived at home my dad would take it and throw it in the woods or down by the river. If he put it down by the river then when the river got higher it would wash it away.

Here where I live in the usa (ohio) people who have real trees, after christmas they are taken out by the curb and on certain days the city or county I don't know which comes by and picks them up, I think they recycle them, how I don't know. but they are all collected at the same time. Where I lived in Louisiana they burn them on New Years Eve.

Seems like burning the used tree is what most people do... i wonder if some can find an alternative to this... like carving the wood into something that would decorate the house... but that would take a lot of skilled carvers...

hello aseretdd,
We never use fake Christmas tree. So our first Christmas tree since we got married is still the same tree that we're using now. We do take care of it and ven wash them before keeping them. The only thing that we keep in changing is the way we decorate it.

In my home this year we just decorated with the average artificial tree and it turned out pretty nice with some lights and ornaments. We will be soon taking it down after the New Year. Sometimes it is sad to take it down. It will seem empty in the house without it!

It is so funny that I have just came across this discussion. My daughter and I just took down the Christmas tree and took off the decorations and placed the tree back in the box and also the decorations and have it ready to place back in the attic until next December 2009.
We have used the same tree for two years and it looks like we will be using it next year as well.

I think Artificial trees are more environment friendly... even if they are made from plastic... because they can be used for a very long time... like the last one that we had... we used it for more than 10 years... maybe even 15...
Thanks for the response...

this is the first year we had a Christmas tree. A guy from our church gave us a real tree. It was such a mess and their was so much maintenence involved. you have to make sure you water it everyday or it dries out too much. so many pine needles fell off the tree everyday that i had to sweep the floor a couple of times a day. i definitely will never have a real tree again. next year, we're getting an artificial tree. mainly for the reason that we'll be able to re-use it every year, there's no mess, and i don't like that real trees are getting cut down just to decorate for Christmas.
As for disposing of the real tree this year... in the city i live, they have different drop off locations. you bring your tree to one of these locations. they then turn the trees into mulch and people can take home as much of the mulch as they want for free if they want any to use in their gardens or wherever else they want to use it.

What is a mulch... i don't know if i have ever seen one... and i never thought that real Christmas trees can be high maintenance... i never experienced having one... but then... i think artificial trees are as great... since they are environment friendly...
