Discussion out of control!

Have you ever started a discussion that didn't go the way you expected it would?
I started one recently about a situation I'd been in, and my views on the situation. Next thing I know the entire discussion explodes into an overdramatic war!!! I really didn't expect that at all. I've started some pretty serious topics in the past, and been involved with some very debatable topics, but never have I experienced this. I finally stopped responding to the comments to pull myself out of it, and next thing I know I'm being called a troll!!! What??
Has that ever happened to you? Have you ever been called a troll?

I've experienced it a time or two on the political board but never on any of the other ones. I've responded to several of your discussions and I wouldn't classify you as a troll! I guess some folks were just frustrated that they couldn't continue to fight the good fight over whatever it was.

I would hope I am not a troll... I don't mean to be, lol.
I've hardly responded to that discussion at all, only to defend myself. They aren't reading it correctly, or making assumptions about it, etc etc. So now they're all fighting amongst themselves and saying horrible things about me. So I just have to ignore it and let them have at each other. It's nuts!! And it's not political either. I didn't mean it to be religious, but a few folks have turned it into that all on thier own. Amazing how that happens.

Kat- While I haven't been in that situtation I can totally get what you are saying. I have seen that happen in so many discussions and people simply don't care what the intent of a discussion was just that they can disagree and be ugly about it. You're not a troll- you have been very nice to me and all the discussions I have started or responded to. So thank you.

Actually you did respond to it, but long before this war broke out. I'm not sure why I'm being called a troll. People are taking what I said out of context, and they're thinking I only started the discussion to get a rise out of them, but as I said, I didn't expect that at all.

Can you PM me and let me know which one? I've looked through them and couldn't find the one you are talking about. I'd like to see why they think you are a troll. I thought trolls only commented on other people's discussions, not on their own.

Oh my goodness. This is never something as far as I know have I ever had happen in any of my discussions and honestly I hope it never does. If it did, I would be upset for sure, and consider turning in the ones trying to start the trouble. But maybe that is why I am trying to steer clear of some of the controversial type of discussions here in fear of this maybe happening for me as well.
But your best interest might be to just let bygones be bygones and learn from your experience and move on. Wishing you the best.

Most discussions I start get only 1-4 responses so I typically start to panic whenever I see a post of mine has garnered 7 or more replies, afraid that just what you've described has happened to me. But actually nothing like it has happened to me here -- if I court controversy at all, it tends to be with my replies to posts and not the topics I start, but I don't think I've ever been called a troll. In a way, though, I can understand why someone might be called that for pulling out of a discussion; trolls like to stir things up rather than engage in meaningful debate so "posting and running" can be a definite troll trait. I certainly don't think of you as a troll, though. Well, I'm off to your profile page to find this wild discussion...I bet you'll get a lot of profile views today after this post!

Scaaaaary.
I'm terrified of conflict, so the thought of people jumping all over me in a discussion is rather petrifying... :(
Hopefully this will never happen to me, and won't happen to you again. :)

I don't bother to participate in discussions when I see them going in that direction. Obviously, if you quit responding, the person who called you a troll doesn't even know what the word means. You have to take into account that people tend to get very emotional about some issues, and if they're not exactly swift thinkers in the first place, that makes any common sense fly completely out the window. I've also noticed that a lot of people have very poor reading comprehension. Their replies make it clear that they either didn't bother to read carefully, or they just didn't understand what was said.

I notice that too and it bothers me sometimes. Usually when I see a comment that clearly points out that the person didn't actually read the discussion, I'll usually ignore the comment, or if I'm in a bad mood to begin with I'll respond with "Thanks for taking the time to read it...".

Oh dear, I must have missed that one! I have never had that happen but I have seen it happen on here before now, over something really trivial too. Funny how emotions can run high on here, its a bit much you being called a troll though, you are no way one of those.

Funny, I don't even remember what that discussion was about that people got so angry about! I do remember people getting angry, I remember the one who called me a troll. I believe what happened was I didn't make myself clear enough so people got the wrong impression about the discussion. I wish I could remember what it was about now!

I´m sorry that this happened to you! I guess it just highlights how things said on the internet can get blown out of proportion as people misunderstand what you mean or allow themselves to say things that they wouldn´t face to face.
Don´t let it put you off myLot!

Nah, nothing that can happen on here can ever drive me away. If and when I leave Mylot it will either be due to something in my personal life, or because the web site has shut down, lol.

Hi ya
I always think its a shame when I read some of the discussions as they get turned in to a minefield.
To have a discussion is to listen to others opinions and to see if you learn something or you view is swayed or confirmed.
There should be no reason for name calling as everyones thoughts are valid even if they don't conform to your own.
I posted a reply with someone recently and they asked if I wanted an honest opinion, I laughed cos whether good or bad how will I ever get an objective view of something without listening and understanding everything about the topic.
I'm really sorry to hear you've had one of those.
I did have one discussion where I go a little angst only because they could see the wood for the trees. I continued to explain the FACT behind what they were saying and in the end I just gave up. I also had a religious one where again they wouldnt look objectively at the information and history surrounding their comment.
It's a shame really to believe something unquestionabley just because it has been told or passed down.
Together on here we really have a good forum to express and learn, good luck with your other posts.

You are definitely right in the way people argue on here.
If I find something that gets my goat, I try to have a think about the best way to put it. I think sometimes people cant see the wood for the trees because they react so fast and don't have a think before-hand.

There's nothing wrong with a good healthy debate, but nobody knows how to debate anymore, it turns into slander and name calling, and then the bashing completely takes it over and they forget what they're arguing about in the first place. Nobody's opinions are worth them being put down for it.

Oh my goodness, no I thankfully I haven't posted any discussions like that, I try to avoid posting or responding to anything to controversial the worst thing Iv ever had happen here is I responded to a discussion that someone else posted and the whole discussion get deleted, now I'm even more careful about what I respond to but I do think that some people get carried away I mean theres no need for name calling lol I mean gee.

I haven't hear but in another forum. I want state any examples so i can avoid repeats. I have had other adults lash out at me because of certain views on topics i have. I know that alot of parents over in the forum are different but i am still uncomfortable with being lashed out at so i avoid anything that can cause such a debate.

Gee, I've been called just about everything in the book...lol! I think I know which discussion you're referring to and I sure don't understand how it went in the direction it went or how anyone would decide to attack YOU over it! I've read lots of your posts and you sure have never seemed like a troll to me!
There was a time when I'd get upset if I was misunderstood here on myLot but I came to the conclusion that when someone else is reading what I wrote without the benefit of hearing my tone or the inflections in my voice it's pretty easy to take things the wrong way. I guess the best thing to do when that happens is to just walk away. It's strange how these things can happen when you least expect it!

You're right, it is best to walk away, some people just don't think before they speak (or type) and some just like causing trouble. It's best not to fuel the fire. But it's still difficult not to take it personally when they attack you for no apparent reason.

No, I cannot say that I've ever been called a troll. But I have seen discussions - mine and others here and elsewhere - change into something they were never intended to be. I suppose that's human nature.

Yes but not here. It's in the gamefaqs forums in which I post something like "The title of starcraft 2?" and "The hardest to control warlord in ROTTK? (Romance of the three kingdoms). Suddenly they responded "Is this guy for real?" and then someone posted "This is another profile of (name)!" so I was hurt... I never recieved a warm welcome.
