Have you ever been denied an opportunity because of your medical condition?

It's one of the worst things ever, when you hear someone tell you that you can't do this because you have this condition. My experience on this matter happened a long time ago, when I was applying for flight school after high school. I've always dreamed of becoming a pilot, and my parents have always encouraged me to follow my dreams. So there I was taking the entrance exams for a prestigious flight school in our country, and when the results came out, I had a pretty good score, more than enough to get me in. Then came the physical exams. I got by the endurance test pretty easily, unfortunately I was diagnosed as being near sighted and color blind by the doctors. Those eye conditions were deemed severe by the school authorities and were the major factors why my application was rejected. we tried to appeal but, it was to no avail. So I ended up taking Electronics Engineering instead, and here I am now. I have often wondered what my life is right now had I got in flight school back then. My eye condition definitely prevented me from realizing that dream of mine. What about you, have you ever been denied an opportunity because of any medical conditions you might have/had? Also how did your career/life went along after missing that opportunity?

Hi brady2moss. I haven't been denied because of a medical condition but have had to change my plans more than once because of circumstance. I originally wanted to go into the medical fiels but wound up taking an electronics course. I got a degree but chance upon a job that would pay better than the entry level wage of my chosen profession so I took it. Then I was thrown into a management position for which I had no experiance, taking a few courses afterward and along the way I've written poetry and articles.Which is and always will be my passion.Life throws us alot of curve balls and I think that by going with it,we actually grow and learn more.Maybe you would've been a great pilot making a lot more money but you wouldn't be the brady2moss you are right now. Or the one you will be tomorrow.

Hi JenInTN. I agree with that, I think things really happen for a reason it's as if someone was actually guiding your way.

to be a pilot in my country you can't have no eye problems whatsoever. its a very good profession to have though because i heard one pilot say he works 2 weeks on than 2 weeks off and gets free airplane vacations as well as making $200,000 a year.

Yeah it's the same everywhere, all pilots MUST have 20/20 vision. It's a great job to be honest, and you get paid handsomely as well.

I haven't had this experience before. Health is wealth indeed. It's very important and that we should all be health conscious especially these days. As my friends would say, "We are not allowed to be sick." Having a good health will determine how well do you do at work and how well people look at you. Stay healthy.

I haven't been rejected because of my medical condition except one slightly similar case...when I was in university, I went to donate my blood. The nurse took trouble working on it but she couldn't find my pipe :-) After a while, she decided that my pipe was too small and let me go :-) That was a funny experience of mine. Of course I never go to donate blood again.

I have never been denied any opportunity on medical ground. Actually I have never been tested so thoroughly for anything. Do not know what it would have revealed. But the job for which I have been tested medically, does not require anything in addition to just good health and I was tested Ok. I am in that job till now. Happy new year

Good for you. Other than the fight school gaffe, I was never denied any opportunity because of health reasons as well.
