Ever since that fascination with Foreign Language film or should I say non-English film, I began to have my nose to those critically acclaimed movies which is not produced in the Hilly Studios of Hollywood.
One of the recent movies that I have watched is the "Life of Others". It is a story that is quite moving and at the same time very perfect in terms of the evolution of the story until its ending.
The story is about a German Stazi officer named Wiesler who have devoted his life in his job as a senior Stazi officer. Stazi's role in the Communist East Germany was to take an eye to those who might become dissidents to the nation.
One of his role was to take an eye of the poet Georg Dreyman. But later on he discovered that his business is to see something which can implicate Dreyman in order for them to prosecute him. This was due to the fact that Dreyman's girlfriend, Christa -Maria is a love interest of of high ranking official named Hempf.
Disillusioned by the personal interest on it, Wiesler covered up some of the activities of Dreyman especially the writing of the article on suicide. What inspired Dreyman to write about suicide is the incident that occured to his friend, fellow writer and stage director Jerska. Since the ban of Jerska from stage, he live his life in pariah with only his companions, the suspected dissenters to which Dreyman is identified as one.
Now Dreyman is the only one who believes he is not being spied. Everyone in their circle of dissenters has acknwoledged that they are spied. Until an incident came and the article about suicide was published with the writer's name withheld. Because of the increasing attention of such article, everyone was suspected especially dreyman.
Only a few knows that dreyman wrote the letter and most especially Wiesler. But as the Stazi police came, the report is not from Wiesler but from his girlfriend Christa-Maria who was nabbed by the Stazis because of her addiction.
Now the later part of the film is something that you should watch as it dramatically creates a very impressive picture of a friend which really is someone whom we do not know.
No wonder this film was critically acclaimed and even won the Oscars best foreign Language film in 2006.
