Hi
I need advice. What type of large dog would be a good pet. Our German Shepherd died. I like the looks of Great Danes, Mastiffs, and Saint Bernards, but also Shepherds. I would like a dog that does not shed a great lot. A dog that could be protective of our home and family. Any personal experience you guys have to share to help with this choice?

In my personal opinion I would have to say a mix breed of shepherd and husky. I have one and he is great. He is very very protective of my family but he is such a big teddy bear when it comes to the family. We have 8 kids and his disposition is so wonderful.

Glad to hear they are good with kids. I think they are really good looking dogs, both shepherds and huskies. I think I should check rescue organizations also.

My vote goes for the husky. They are very loyal dogs and also quite entertaining. The only thing is you need to have a lot of room for them to run. Th don't like being confined and they love cold weather. If you live in a very warm climate they may not be a good choice either. I have two of them the one pictured, and his mother. They are the best dogs ever!

They are very sharp looking dogs. It does get pretty cold here in the winter, and not too bad in the summer. I forgot to say that I have kids, but I imagine if I got the dog young it could be raised around the kids and be fine. Do they shed a lot?

They are very good with kids. I do not keep mine in the house but yes they do shed a lot in the summer. Mine got shot accidentally a few weeks ago and I had to keep him in the house for 2 weeks while he healed and I decided that he was way too big for me to keep in! LOL He did fine and would probably be ok if he had been trained for the house from a pup but he was uneasy being indoors and so was I! LOL
