Meditation- does it have to be made according to the `RULES`?

I like to perceive meditation as a process where a person can calm down, relax, free his spirit and get `into a touch` with his soul and mind. But...Does the process of meditation has to be done according to the RULES? I mean, specific poses and breathing are COMPULSORY or just ADDITIONAL? I have never learned how to practice Meditation properly, so I kinda made my own way of meditation. And don`t think it is something wrong because as long as the main aim is reached: it still is the meditation, right? In fact, from time to time I see the `official` poses of meditation on the web and on television, and have realized that I have been practicing the same meditation pose for years (!) without even knowing that it is `an official pose` for a meditation process! So how do You think: is it a crime to practice meditation `unlegally`- without practicing common poses and breathing during the process of meditation?

Crime? Lol! You must have a licence to meditate! :) I guess learning those poses can help lessen the burden in calming the mind. The mind may give up more easily in certain poses. You may get intuitive but I think it's good to know those postures or asanas as they are called, because people have been practicing them for a reason and have succeeded with them for thousands of years. The final aim is the same I guess. It's a one thing if you see meditation as a relaxing exercise. However if you actually awake kundalini and if you survive it (I mean it) you'd better get in touch with a serious teacher so he/she can show you what is good for you. You may require to change your diet, your habits and generally everything about your lifestyle. If kundalini is awakened and you don't change, you may not be able to handle the experiences, which may shift from extatic visions to total insanity, which isn't a nice thing. So taken from this perspective you should have a license to do it :) You may do untold damage to yourself. God forbid!

I've never taken a meditation class, but I love meditating. There are many poses and methods you can use to approach meditating. Some I've tried and found to be uncomfortable and even distracting, which seems to defeat the purpose. I think the poses are only important if you are participating in a class or if you are doing yoga, where the poses are a key element. If the method you are using works best for you, then by all means continue to do so.

No not really. But some of those poses because of the way they are built they help with calming down our minds. But if you can go to your level quickly without going into those poses then that's great. Plus you can make your own by programming your mind to remember it as a trigger each time you begin meditation.
