Do you believe on this? My Aunt usually do this every new year's eve. She will buy 12 different kinds of fruits, all are in round shape for she said it brings good luck for the whole year. Those fruits represents the 12 months of the year. I just don;t understand how this is related to the success of a person? Of course if a person works hard, even if he has no 12 fruits in his table he will definitely be successful in that year. What about you? do you believe in this? are you also having this superstitious?

Not sure what this relates to, I always eat black eyed peas for good luck but that's cause I only eat them once a year, New Years. Not really superstitious so having round fruit on my table wouldn't mean anything except I've got round fruit on my table.

I've never heard of this superstition before, nor do I think I believe it. The only thing I've heard about having good luck, is by eating black eyed peas on New Year's Day, and every year, we always had them at dinnertime, and we still do. I don't know if its true either, but hey if it helps why not..lol.

You just cook it like you would cook beans, and have them with whatever your having dinner with, just as long as you get some black eyed peas somewhere...lol.

Happy 2009!Amen Bebs, my relatives practice this 12 round fruits on New Year's as well...Yet I like to think of it more as a tradition than as a superstition: ). Also, wearing polka dots on New Year's supposedly brings good luck! Guess who's wearing polka dots tonight? Silly me will be all decked out in dots... all in the name of 'tradition'! Have a good one!

I am not doing that tradition, the 12 or 13 kinds of fruits on the table at new year's eve. No.. no.. to me because I can not see the significance of success on that. We must work hard to be successful. We will not depend on the 13 kinds of fruits to have a prosperous life. We must work for it.

Never heard of those things anyway it seems to be fun buying round fruits and thats also of different kinds. I am not very superstitious and i don't know those things, i have heard different stories what people do on new year and its really interesting to many superstitious beliefs around the world. When we were kinds my parents used to tell us to be happy and not to do any bad works on new years day as it will be like that the whole year. But they no longer mention these days anyway wishing you a very happy new year.

Hi Bebs,
Actually, my family is doing this when we started working( my sis and I) since before we cannot afford to buy 12 different fruits!
We started doing this but with an effort also like working hard, love our work and take care of it!
I know it has no relationship but I admit, my family has a lots of beliefs which others find it funny...But, still we are doing it! LOL!

I have not heard of this superstition before, so I do not this, but I will do it next year now that I know about it. I have heard that you are suppossed to eat donuts or fried pastries on New Years day, that is a superstition from one country. I have also heard that you should eat pork on New Years day, that came from another country. So this year we had donuts and a slice of ham for breakfast on New Years day. I know it is just a superstition, and is silly, but I will take any help we can get.

Ha!ha!ha! As I've mentioned in your other discussion, I used to do this. And that was when I was still newly married. I learned this tradition from the mother in law of my sister and decided to follow. However, later as I begun to contemplate on the relevance of those fruits over my luck and also through my new faith, I realized there is no sense doing. If I want to succeed I need to work and strive hard and ask God's help and need not rely on those fruits. How stupid I was then but I'm glad I have now known the right way to celebrate the New Year. I have not been buying 12 different kinds of round fruits for more than 20 years but still God has been generously and lovingly pouring His blessings to me. I know there is only one key and that is found in Matthew 6:33: "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

well I never knew about this wonderful custom! It may be superstition but it will certainly make the dinner table look so beautiful. Also I think this is the festive season when people usually eat a lot of unhealthy food. So having fruits is one way of putting something healthy in that. Though this is not a part of my custom, but I think it’s a wonderful idea and I would buy the twelve round fruits today itself for my dinner table tomorrow.
(Oh but 12 ROUND fruits…ummmmmmm I don’t think I would find so many of that particular shape)

Oh!! that would be good if you can have that in your table for the new year's eve. I am not observing that but most of my friends, and my aunt did it. Well, my sister told me today while we have a chat that she has 13 kinds of fruits hahahaha that's too much. She got that idea from my aunt and cousin. This is the first time my sister did this. Cool!! I am curious to know the result of that this year.

It's a tradition here on Philippines, and it's not 12 but 13 round fruits not sure though but some prepare 12 and some 13. People here welcome New year with those fruits on table. It says good luck and abundance for the coming year. Actually we have too and its 7 hours to go and its new year. It is just a believe really we had get used to it so its part of the culture but of course i also believe like you that being lucky in life is really depend on the person itself. It's not the fruits or anything is the hard work of the person that give riches. So together with all those different believes of luck and the hard work by the person that i believe will bring goodness in his life. Anyways, just my two pence. Happy New Year. May all of us have bless coming year.

Oh yes hehehe 13 kinds of fruits.. that's what my sister told me today. She said she has 13 kinds of fruits in her table for the new year's eve. It's my sister's first time to have this kind of superstitious. LOL But anyway, it is good so that the kids will be able to eat variety of fruits for the new year.

hello Bebs08,
I grew up with a family that believe in a lot of superstitious. And because of this, we do like your aunt is doing too every year. There's nothing wrong about doing it. Nothing to lose as well for you can eat all the fruits too. Just believe that it will happen.
So from then on till this time that I have my own family, we're doing it too. Is like a menu that it should be in the list always in times of this occasion. Why don't you try it, who knows it can bring luck to you too?

hahahaha I would like to try but... here in US? partying during new year's eve is not usual specially in the place where I am now. It is very different from where you are today. Well, i can maybe do that but is not interesting to me because we are only 4 in the house now. No visitors, no friends around. As if nothing happens. It;s like an ordinary day. Nothing special and I also don;t believe it.. LOL.

We don't do this, but we have a lot of fruits, haha. 12 kinds of fruits! Do you eat all that? We have round fruits for sure, like the kiat kiat or mini oranges that are really cute. I guess every culture has different ways of bringing in the good luck for the new year. Happy New Year to you all!

I have a lot of relatives and friends who did the same, buying round-shaped friuts for the New Year's eve to make success stays through out the year. Am not sure if this kind of practice is only in the Philippines or also in some other countries. Personally i don't believe int his and never practiced such; I consider it as just some kind of superstitions. I believe that success will come to those who labored and worked hard to attain their goals in life w/ God's help and guidance.

You are correct!! hahah I just don;t understand the relationship of the fruits and the hard labor to attain success. You can be successful without that 12 kinds of fruits. Even if you have that 12 kinds of fruits then you are lazy? there is no good luck for you.. that's what I think.
