For all you single people out there, Do you cook for yourself?

I am single, and discovered that getting frozen dinners for myself is much much less expensive than trying to cook full meals for myself. I can eat a hot lunch and dinner for about $2.50 a day, and a full meal-say dinner- would cost me around $12 to fix by the time you get all the ingredients. I will say about twice a month I do cook dinner for my BF. Otherwise it's cheaper to toss a frozen dinner in the microwave.
The question is do you cook for yourself or do you eat frozen dinners or even eat out?

i cook for myself. hardly ever eat out, no fun by yourself. buy some frozen things every once in awhile but not ofter. wyat i do alot of times is when i make something like chili which i made yesterday, i will freeze alot of it to have later. when i make a recipe for a casserole i'll make 2 or 3 out of it & freeze it. to me that's better than what u buy. happy new year!

I do the same with Chili. I freeze a lot of it in smaller portions. I also make squash soup, a favourite with my kids. There is usually non left over to freeze. Sometimes I buy a bag of navy beans and make baked beans. The problem is it makes so much for very little money (pennies per serving) and I find beans don't freeze all that well. So when I make baked beans I usually buy a small ham as well and have people over. Then I freeze the rest of the ham in cubes in zip lock bags or make a casserole that calls for cubed ham. I admit it is some work, but I must eat healthy food or I am in trouble healthwise.

I am divorced for the last almost 9 years and I do cook for myself. But I cook mostly 2-3 times a week a meal the size I did when I had all my family at home. Then I have plenty of leftovers either to eat the rest of the week or to freeze for future quick meals. I also make quick things that I can do easily without making large meals. Those are one time meals with no leftovers. I don't do tv dinners because they are not good nutrition and pack a lot of negative calories. Plus I do not see them as good value as there isn't much to them.

I am retired and yes I cook for myself. First of all it is cheaper, secondly I am on a budget and thirdly because the prepared dinners are very unhealthy. They are full of additives, preservatives, way too salty and way too much sugar. I recently participated in a Supermarket Tour led by a registered dietician. It was free and really worth my while. Many many of the leading illnesses in the Western World in particular in North America are caused or intensified by eating unhealthy processed foods. I plan my meals around what is in season and what is on special.
For instance today I am making a roasting pan full of cabbage rolls. The cabbage fresh and green was .99 cents for a big head. 1 cup of brown rice which I had in the house maybe .50 cents, 1 onion, a few cents (the bag of five pounds was really cheap). 1 small piece of pork belly was 1.23 which I cut up finely and discarded the fat to mix with the rice. 1 can of spaghetti sauce to top the cabbage rolls was on sale a couple of weeks ago for .69.
Cost for 4 portions:.50 1 half cabbage
.50 brown rice
1.23 meat
.15 onion
.69 spaghetti sauce
_____
3.07 makes total cost of .78 cents per portion. I eat 2 portions 2 days in a row maybe with a boiled potato and a dollop of no fat sour cream.
I freeze two portions for another day.
I shredded the other half of cabbage finely, added 1 grated carrot and one grated apple. It made quite a big bowl of cole slaw dressed with vinegar, oil, salt and pepper and a pinch of sugar.
If I get tired of the plain cole slaw I add some raisins and walnuts and a bit of Miracle Whip to make it into a Waldorf Salad.
I do eat out usually once a month, sometimes twice a month when I visit my kids.
I don't know where you live in the USA but I have visited there many many times and usually found food cheaper there, particularly canned goods. I usually bring back some tuna packed in water, tiny corn cobs in water, roasted red peppers in small jars. I use those items in stir frys which I can make for pennies per serving. You should try it sometimes.

I also do the frozen dinner thing....it's way cheaper...it a way to get a better variety.....and you don't mess up the kitchen. I do on ocassion cook a meal for myself....but most of the time it's quicker and easier to just put a tv dinner in the microwave.

Well no, mainly because i do not know to cook much. Second reason is because i hardly get the time. We get something known as Tiffin Service, where in each sector/block,there would be a household that would cook full meals and sell it to us in a tiffin box. They are cheap and home-cooked and tasty. Costs only 30 bucks. Hardly a dollar!!
Cool huh??
