There are two versions of software which come into the market. Alpha and Beta.
Beta versions are generally launched in the market by the company to check if it runs good or not. Its generally given free as the company wants to know if there is a bug or not. Beta version means checking version. Its like demo but with full functionality.
When the company finds that beta is running fine then it creates its alpha version and then lauches it into the market. This is the full version of that software.
I hope it made my point clear.
Happy new year.

Actually Alpha comes first, then the beta, then usually an RC (Release Candidate) or two, then the "Final". I put that in parenthesis, because while it is no longer in Beta there are still usually more improvements that happen along the way.

A BETA version is a test version, aimed at being tested by users before the official release. Launching beta versions of a software allows users to test and report bugas, before the official version is launched.

Hi dear,
I will try 2 solve ur query...
Every time new software is launched , the companies first of all want to check/test whether it is up to the mark in client's view. So they release a pre-version calles Beta version which actually to get the response of the users. After a specific period of time, they collect all the feedbacks and then improve the s/w if needed and then the final version comes into the market....

Development of a commercial application is a very long procedure. Their are design stages, development stages(actual coding) and then there are testing stages. In testing stage itself their are various types like Unit Testing, Integration Testing, System Testing, Validation Testing, etc. In Validation Testing, their are two type, Alpha and Beta testing.
After the application is fully developed and all other tests are over, it is time for alpha and beta testing. These two type of testing are done to find out how well the application is doing in it's real environment i.e. with its users. In alpha testing, users are asked to use the application in front of the developers, at the developers' place and after that, the required corrections are made. Then, in beta testing, the corrected alpha version is tried by the users in the real environment i.e. at the users place itself. Like you have tried Yahoo Messenger 9 Beta. A beta version is an application still in development stage; I should say. I hope you got what beta is....

It means it's the test version and they still have a few more kinks to work out before releasing the official version.

It's a public trail release in simple terms. It's a good habit for any company to test and rectify the issues in their products before the actual release. In fact many companies does alpha releases. In most cases alpha release will be internal to the company and to their clients/relationships. Beta will be for public release.

"BETA" mean software that release by the software publisher to be tested by the public. The publisher also expect that the user that tested the software will notified them when they found a problem. This important because the publisher can fixed the problem before they release the official version.
