How can I get enough sleep

No matter what time I go to bed - have been going to bed around eleven, and then at ten thirty, I find myself waking up about three or four hours later. Now most of the time it is to go to the washroom and I do it once, and I do go back to sleep sometimes, but sometimes I will go to bed at around ten thirty or eleven, and cannot fall asleep until about one or two in the am. It does not matter if I drank milk, or coffee. It seems that I cannot fall asleep. I do not want to take any pills or anything for it. It seems as if my body only lets me sleep about five to seven hours and I am sure I need more. I also have a weight problem, and was wondering whether the reason I have a weight problem is because I am unable to sleep the whole seven to eight hours that I should.
Any suggestions?

I have also heard that lack of sleep contributes to a weight problem, suspenseful, so it could probably be part of my problem. I've always been a night owl. My mother used to tell me that the older you get the less sleep you require, but I had to confess to my doctor that I often feel tired during the day due to lack of sleep at night. It's hard to sleep in because the phone starts in the morning when all of the normal people are up and about. I do take something to help me sleep, but not to put me to sleep. Often it's a case of whether or not I allow myself to fall asleep. My doctor suggested turning off everything at a specific time at night and lying down in complete darkness. That doesn't work for me because I listen to the radio at night and it helps me fall asleep if the volume is not too loud.

I would like to do that, but my husband keeps the Tv on when I am in bed (the Tv is in the living room) and since he had a stroke and needs a walker, I have to keep the bedroom door open. I do feel tired during the day, but do not know if it is because of lack of sleep or my S.A.D.

I heard that reason people gain weight is because they do not get enough sleep. Now if that lack of sleep is deliberate as inferred by the studies that is all my fault, but what if that lack of sleep was unintentional that no matter when I go to bed, I still only get less then eight hours of sleep, is that not a problem? I do take a diabetic pill in the am, but that only keeps me from getting up twice a night to go to the washroom, but that is all. I still wake up.

I've had the same problem, even when I am underweight. I know it's related to my other health problems, though. My back begins to hurt so bad that I have to get up after about six or seven hours. It's better when I have a lot of sugar or salt right before bedtime for me. I hear that your liver is actually doing something with your blood sugar at about three or four in the morning, but I don't know the details.

Yes at three or four in the morning, I have this uncontrollable urge to go to the washroom. And it is as if I just had a large glass of water.

I am sorry to hear that you are having a hard time getting enough sleep. There have been days that I am having difficulty in getting sleep. Say I haven't sleep for 24 hours (my work is so demanding that I can stay up for 24 hours) so I know I need to sleep the whole day, or more to take back what I lost. But you know after 4 to 5 hours, I will be awake. I tried to go back to sleep but I just can't. They said that I should not drink anything that has caffeine on it, if I really want to get sleep. More water and juice is advised to me. Lately, it was working. I also learned how to set mood before sleeping, I want it cold and dark. I used scented candles to give me the relaxing aroma, sometimes, I read books, until I am really tired. There are times that I listen to classical songs, instrumental music to make me relax and have the right timing for sleeping. These are just my simple practices, for me it helps.

They say turning off the TV or lights an hour before bed helps you relax. Me, doesn't matter. I realize you don't want to take pills, but what about a natural supplement? I take 3mg of melatonin every night to sleep. If I don't, I'm awake all night. Its an all natural supplement you can get in the vitamin aisle.

for me taking or eating a lot of fruits help me a lot. cause when i eat more of them than meat then i feel so light that my mind can easily rest and sleep. but when i ate some meat or some significant amount i find it hard to sleep. so when i want to have nice sleep always. i just stay away from oily foods and meats, i tend to limit my intake some times i just try to drink fruit juice that i extracted my self with juicer machine. then i just drink them. and for sure i will be able to sleep a lot and have a very nice one or sleep.
i haev been doing this every time i have trouble sleeping.

Sometimes the body only thinks it needs 5-7 hours asleep insteadof the whole 8 hours. My husband doesn't sleep a whole 8 hours ever. Could you have sleep apnea? I drink hot chocolate and it helps sometimes other times not. I would suggest that you talk to your doctor about this and see that they have to say. I would also suggest to stay up for as long as you can before going to bed when you feel the tiredess and not drink alot of fluids so your body isn't waking you up to use the bathroom.

The trouble is that I have to drink lots of water because of the medication my doctor gave me to lower my blood pressure *(after giving those pills to lower my blood sugar, now he starts me on blood pressure pills, and from what I heard this is for the rest of my life. ) and that means I cannot get away with no water in the evening. In fact, now I have to drink more.

I have the same problem having to get up to go to the washroom and sometimes not being able to go back to sleep. I seem to have to go more at night than during the day. It could be your diabetes and or the medication that you take for it might be interfering with your sleep. I know that I will get to hurting so I have to get up and move.

I used to get up three times in the night, but now it is just once, but I want to be able to sleep all through the night and since it seems that not sleeping enough contributed to my weight gain, I never could get enough sleep. I do not want to increase my prescription if that is what is helping me down from three times a night to one time.

I find sometimes I wake up tired and sometimes I do not. I also am diabetic and that could be the problem. Yesterday I got a better sleep, but I did not do any napping and I walked a lot so that might have helped.

I am a light sleeper, unless very very tired or ill, it's easy for me to wake up.
I have the same problem for a while but I'm sure it's not due to weight. I find that if my belly is too full or empty, I can only take a nap not actual sleep. So whatever it is I eat or drink, doesn't determine it because I don't drink coffee anyway. Also stress about anything can ruin my efforts to sleep.
I don't want to take pills I am just afraid that I will depend on it plus we can't just nip stress in the bud with medicine, it will come back until the problem is solved. So what I do is sleep when I need it. I will read, listen to music, mylotting, play with my cat, clean the house (yes, even at midnight), ebay-ing etc and then when I am tired I will sleep. I couldn't do this when I was employed, but because my business is done by appointment I have no problem.
It actually works better this way. It's "I need to sleep" instead of "I have to sleep". I know I need sleep, but I don't have to sleep when I don't have to. So the pressure is gone and makes me sleep better.

It does not matter if I drink coffee or not. I tried to stop coffee drinking in the evening, and drank milk, but it did not good. I tried not to drink water before I went to bed, but then when I got up at 4 am or whenever it was not clear, and that was also due to my pills I have to take, so now I have to drink water. I have no idea what it is. But if I am a light sleeper, then my weight control problem is a natural result.

Hi suspenseful,
I have that problem also when I will go to bed late than usual, have you tried sleeping earlier than that? I do know if it works for you!
I woke up several times just to pee also in the middle of the night or dawn but I can always go back to sleep...Anyway, I remember when I used to exercise regularly, I always get a great and straight sleeP! Maybe you can try it!

I have been going to bed at ten thirty and eleven. And that was earlier than I had to before, when I went to bed at eleven thirty and twelve. So how far early do I go? Shall I try for nine thirty and ten o'clock? I mean I hated as a child when I had to go to bed at eight, and my brother who was younger could stay up until eight thirty.

You need to schedule your activities so you can make up and get some sleep. That's good don't take any pill because it's not good for your health. Try to get some warm shower before going to bed and take 1 full glass of warm milk to be able to fall asleep. Try to relax and make your mind free from worries.

I have to try not to worry, but it is hard with my husband's stroke and him wanting us to move to a senior apartment where I will have to take a bus or ask a friend for a ride other then walking. And then he talked about taking the bunny bus since he is handicapped and I was hoping after February going grocery shopping either alone or with my daughter-in-law since he will not have a drivers license since his hands are arthritic.

That happens to me sometimes,I sleep very well for weeks and then for no apparent reason I only need five hours a night. It used to bug me and worry me,but after excepting the fact I have got used to it now,I leave things to do for the early hours, quiet things.Thats what I have found anyway.

That what annoys me, I know I need more sleep and yet there is one night when I get less and all this associating weight gain with less sleep gets me worried. It is not as if I planned to sleep less. It just happens. And taking a drink of milk before bed only helps so far. I still wake up around 2.

I have never heard of weight gain associated with sleep less nights I would have thought it would have been the other way round, getting up in the night is all movement.I really don't think you should worry about gaining weight through lack of sleep.that is what is stressing you out no wonder you cannot sleep.

I've heard too that not sleeping well can cause a weight problem, but I've heard it the other way around, too. I have the same problem you do in that I sleep for 3 or 4 hours, then wake up and can't go back to sleep. It doesn't happen every night, but more often than not.
Have you tried an herbal remedy? They make relaxers (not melatonin). I've used some from Grandma's Herbs (I think that's the name) and they do help.

Make sure you cut your caffine and sugar in take way down. More like 3 to 4 hours befor eyou lay down. That alone could cause you to wake back up. Once you start to take pills. It is really hard not to have to take them for th erest of your life. As they can be very addicting. I know I take prescription medication to sleep.

We really dont need all that much sleep as we get older the less sleep we get.
DOnt really think weight has much to do with it.
I bet you lay there and worry about what to eat the next day so that it knocks of the weight you want to loose and what to eat to keep diabetes away.
I read till I get sleepy adn then I just turn over and got to sleep no probly . Dont worry about what the next day will bring. CLear your mind of all things then you should be able to sleep when ya should!

First don't drink caffine after say 2pm in the afternoon (including soda and coffee).
Second go to bed the same time every night and make a habit of doing the same things every night before you go to bed... make it a habit that this is what you do so your brain will know it is time to shut down.
Third the bed is for two things... sleeping and well....... anyways the bed is for sleeping, not reading, not watching TV but for sleeping. This again will help tell the mind it is time to shut off.
I try to take myself to a 'fairy tale' place where reality is not involved... it helps to sooth me and allows me to fall asleep. The other thing I did was to buy a (very) expensive pillow and bed... proper alignment of the spine is critical.
Don't nap during the day... if you do feel tired drink water... yeah you heard me drink water....
Hopefully that will help you out!
Thanks
Zelo

before you sleep try not to drink anything so that you'll not go to the bathroom during the night. Don't drink coffee because it's a stimulator which means it wakes you up. Try not to think of anything before you sleep. do relaxation techniques, try listening to music or find something which relaxes you and use it before you go to sleep. The sleeping time depends on the person. Some would only need about 6-7 hours while others need more.. i hope this helps:)

I think maybe you have to make schedule. It is not only can make your time ordered, but also can make you not feel too strained. Also you can take some measure for your weight and obserbve the effect reducing weight. I know the feeling of yours. My way is when I want to sleep but can't fall sleep, I will read some books can help me, like chicken soup and so on. Maybe you can take other way suitable for you.
Hope you can have good sleep later and Happy New Year!
