It's a rating assigned according to your activity on the Lot and others' responses to it. Nobody seems able to figure out how the administrators make up their minds about this, though.
Welcome to myLot, newbie. You're sure to love it, as the rest of us do!
Incidentally, you don't get a star until you've passed 100 posts, you get to use the emoticons at 200 posts, and after 500, you can cut and paste within a post.

That's something I've never paid any attention. It varies, depending upon the amount of time I have and whether I see posts I want to respond to. I also start discussions at random, whenever something pops into my head.
Glad you're part of my friends' circle!

Ostensibly the star is a peer rating system that measures the quality of your contributions. It is rather used by the community to punish you if you disagree with someone, or sometimes a troll might come by and give you a negative rating. You will see a three little icons to your right a plus sign, a negative sign and an exclamation mark. Anyone can rate your post + or - or if they want to report you as an offensive post they can do so with the !. You might get your post deleted if it is reported. The + or - just affects your star rating. Mouse over the star and you will see the rating out of 100. The star themselves are out of 10.
