Whenever you think of starting a discussion, do you search first before actually posting that discussion? It was actually stated in the guidelines that you have to search for existing discussions before posting one.
I did this many times and i came upon discussions which were posted year or months ago and can be considered 'dead' already since the last responses were also months ago.
IF this is the case, would it be okay if i post a similar discussion now?
second, I just noticed today that there are discussions which are repeated 2-3 times, some on the same interest, others on different interests. AND they are exactly the same question/discussion.
So I am wondering:
Do you guys search first for a discussion in mind before actually starting it? Why? Thanks in advance!

You know what, I sure dont do a search before posting. I didnt know we were supposed to and Im not sure how to search. Im still new here and dont see anything that says 'search'. Maybe the only way to search is to look under all the discussions, which sounds like a lot of trouble. Can you offer advice about searching? Thanks.

Yes janjee I do conduct a search before I start a discussion. I don't start a lot of discussions and so far so good. As far as I know I haven't started one that someone else has. The bad thing is just when you think you are so unique and thought of something...guess what...someone beat you to it! LOL

I do always search before posting a discussion, yes. The issue though is that the seacrhc funtionality on this site is not as accurate as I would like! There have been many occasions when I have looked for certain topics and not found any. But when I finally do post my own discussion, I suddenly see similar ones show up! It all comes down to the tags everybody uses and what I may consider to be a relevant tag may not be the same used by someone else, so these things do happen.
If I come across a very similar discussion to mine after I have posted it, I will go into their discussion and respond to it. I will let them know that I did search, but theirs didn't come up and I will apologise. As long as people DO search first and do not copy other topics intentionally, then I don;t see any major issue with it.

I haven't been here in mylot for awhile but actually i haven't done searching a topic before i start a discussion. Sometimes i just get so excited and just create my "masterpiece" witout even thinking that maybe some mylotters may have the same thinking as mine. :-) I don't know but i think nothing's really that identical in their posts, somehow i think one may have a unique opinion from another.

The first thing I always do is search myLot. When I don't find what I'm looking for, i open a topic. Sometimes I find what I'm looking for but it's from a long time ago. Then I decide to start a topic, because it can be outdated...

well, till you started this discussion, i didnt even think about searching is someone had already started a discussion with same topics. Infact i didnt even notice a search bar on top of my mylot page. But after going through your discussion, i realized this and i can tell you for sure that next time i wont start a topic without first checking it out.

Thanks for bringing this up. I do not usually search for topics if wanted to start a discussion, I write discussion because that is what I thought about, or I just really want to share it. I also understand the fact that whenever we start a discussion, someone already has thought and wrote about it, or someone similar had been written to what we are planning to write. We are so many here so it is really impossible to have a discussion which is very "unique" one way or another. I am also the type of member, who responds to discussion more than creating a new one.
Thank you for your post.

Nah, i don't search anymore. I do respond to some discussions first before being able to come up with my own new discussion. I'm slow when it comes to thinking of a new topic, but sometimes, I get ideas from other people's discussions and my responses to them and that's when I start writing my own discussion. Anyway, the point is to make money, so if posting something similar to one that already exists is allowed, then I will do it for the sake of earning a few extra cents!

Hi Janjee, I do search before I start any discussion; or else it stands the chance of being deleted, and with it, the comments of others who have responded.
There are many discussions nowadays that are almost similar, some word for word - so I often hesitate to respond, not sure whether the myLot admin would delete!

when i srat a new discussion i try a research on that topic. but when i need to answer or respond to any discussion then i don't really do any research because they want you opinion not the research topic that you are going to include in the discussion. so it is for me that i do when i feel i should do it because i have less knowledge about the topic. but if we have to write a brief summary about any topic then surely we need some research about that otherwise difficult to write.

Boy is my face red! I have NEVER done a search to see if a discussion has been done before. I try to avoid discussions like "What's your favorite song?" and "Do you believe in God?" since I have seen those for myself more than 5 times a day. I try to get my discussions based on things happening in my life or to people I know so that it might be slightly unique. I suppose I should have read those guidelines a little more carefully! Thanks for the info.

They say great minds think alike so its almost a given that some topics are going to be similar just by the laws of the universe.Thats why I try to create fun, off the wall type discussions that make a MF say "Only in the mind of Malinium" ya dig.The more crazy it is makes it harder to be duplicated, even if by accident.

Hello janjee!
I rarely start my own discussion. I am the type of myLotter who spends more time responding to discussions started by others. But if I intend to start my own discussion, I search for the topic first. More often than not, I have topics in mind that are not yet available or even if they are available, the discussion is no longer active. Well, in that case, I would start the discussion in mind.
