My son is 14 months old and usually takes two naps a day. He is beginning to act like he only needs one nap. He will just sit in his crib and play when he is suppose to be taking his afternoon nap. If he doesn't end up taking his nap, he never gets cranky or anything. I was wondering what kind of nap schedule your child had. Should I take him down to only one nap a day?

From what I read in the magazine, goal for a nap is to allow your child to get adequate rest to fuel the rest of the day. The optimal length of naps varies by age and among children, but the best naps are usually 1 to 2 hours in length. If your child tends towards short naps, don't give in and assume that its all the nap time that he needs. Try some of these tips for increasing the length of his naps:
1. Give your child lunch or a snack about a half hour before nap.
2. Make certain the sleeping room is dark.
3. Play soothing music or white noise during the entire nap.
4. Make sure that your child is comfortable. He should not get too cold or too hot. His sleeping attire should be cozy.
5. Check to see if discomfort from teething, allergies, asthma, ear infection or other health-related issues are preventing your child from taking longer naps.
For 12 mos old :-number of naps is 1-2, total length of nap time hours is 2-3, night time sleep hours is 11-12, total of night time and nap time sleep is 13-14
Same as 18 mos old.
I hope this helps for you and your baby beth.. Happy mylotting!

My own schedule has been very hectic, and as a result our twin boys never adopted a precise schedule. They 13 months (minus ten weeks pre-mature) and still take two naps a day. BUT they nap when they fall asleep, not because I tell them to. AND they usually keep me up till 3 or 4 in the morning even though they are clearly tired by around 11pm.
If he has been very good about taking his naps up to this point, I would presume that a sudden change means he really just doesn't need two any more, and if you were to succeed in getting him to do it, it might just making him stay up late at night instead.
Sometimes babies are smarter than us. :)

I would try to narrow down to one nap. In my sons daycare they narrow them down to one nap at one years old. They take a two hour nap after lunch and thats it. Two hours give or take some should be good for your son.
