Some of you might have learned this news about the active ingredient in most of our cold medicines, Phenylpropanolamine or simply PPA. PPA is usually found in medicines circulated in the Philippines like Medicol, Bioflu, Neosep, and other cold medicines.
The Federal Drug Authority or (FDA) in the us has issued a warning on the use of PPA which can cause hemorraghic stroke. In a study conducted by the Dept. of Psychiatry in Maryland, more people have been diagnosed with acute mania or paranoia due to the in take of PPA in high dosage. This has led to some speculations that Cold medicines are not only dangerous to physical health but mental health as well.
Cold medicines act differently as compared to anti-biotics. I think most of you think that these medicines will kill the cold virus. However, for many years despite of many attempt by the medical field, called virus is something you really cannot avoid. For the reason that it usually mutate into another strain. However, no matter how strong the virus is, the body can easily cope with it with enough rest and natural resistance.
Now back to the mechanisms of PPA, PPA acts as decongestant. It increases the supply of blood in some areas and thus prompting the nasal area to decongest. Now since this medicine work by blood mechanism, complications that leads to stroke will usually occur. For this reason, the medicine has been discontinued in the US. In Europe, it is no longer a OTC but instead become a prescription medicine.
Now my question is raised to you and to everyone here. Would you still use drugs with PPA? Do you think we should do something to prevent the circulation of this drugs?
I hope you have a good time mylotting and thank you for your response.
