Window curtains...

I use those venetian mini blinds on my windows, no curtains just the blinds. A few months ago I wanted to change the look so I bought gold curtains and put them up. I did some big cleaning for the coming new year and wanted everything washed so I took the curtains down and went to the laundromat. I put them in the machine and washed them in hot water and liquid detergent then I put them in the dryer. The dryer at my laundromat costs 25 cents for 8 minutes so I put in 7 quarters which gave me 56 minutes and set the dryer on the hottest setting, I sat down and watched the TV they have there. I think I might have done something wrong, when I took the curtains out of the dryer they are now the size of a pillow case! I am so mad, where did I mess up, washing them in the hot water, was the setting on the dryer too high or did I keep them in the dryer too long? Someone please tell me so I don't make this mistake again. I think I am better off with the mini blinds.

You went wrong when you used the hot water to wash your curtains, you should have used warm or cold water and a mild detergent, and you let them stay in the dryer too long one to two quarters would have been enough. You didn't state if they where light of heavy curtain. All that heat and hot water shrinked your curtains.

Thanks for explaining where I went wrong. Now I know for next time. They are neither light nor heavy, they are "mini curtains" now.

I only have Faux blinds now on the windows. They are easy to clean. Were the curtains cotton? Cotton really shrinks even though it might say the item has been preshrunk. I always wash things of that nature in cold water and generally don't dry them. When I had curtains, it was better to wash and hang wet. Sometimes, if they were long and I wanted pleats, would clip the bottom of the curtains or drapes with paperclips to make a crease. They always turned out real nice. Next time, wash in cold water and skip the dry cycle.

Hi Hard. Sorry to hear about your curtains . I prefer curtains to blinds any day. Its hard to guess at what you may have done wrong though as the fibre content of the curtain fabric usually detemines how to wash and care. Silk, brocade, net, cotton or mixed fibre etc...Its best that you read and follow the care instructions on them as warm ar cold wash can ruin the item if its not to be done. Awwww come on now. Curtains are so beautiful and adds so much life and character to a room . Dont be daunted. I hope you'll try again but just stick to the instructions on the lable.

hello howard oh my gosh! i am so sorry to hear about your gold curtains getting ruined like that. i have those mini blinds in all of my windows in my house except for my living room windows, they are arched around and not straight so i couldn't figure out how to hand the mini blinds in those windows, so i went to Lowe's and had somebody that worked in the mini blinds department to help me out with my big living room window, so what i did was purchase two sets of curtains for the living room window so that they would fit across it. well when i take my living room curtains down to wash them and hang them back up, what i do is mostly use warm to cold water when filling up the washer and then i just put them in the dryer for about five minutes or so just to get out any wrinkles that might still be on the curtains, then from there i remove them from the dryer and hang them back up, taking the scissors and cutting any loose strings that might be on them as well. want to come on over here today and help me take down my living room curtains and wash them and hang them back up? lol i have to get up in a chair when taking the curtains down and in putting them back up. grrr. what a pain in the butt. take care and have a beautiful day today!

I am sorry that the curtains shrank on you. That is too bad. That is like several shirts that I bought some time back: they were size xx when I bought them, and size small when I got them out of the washing machine. I was upset. They were such pretty shirts. For curtains, I like to use pretty sheets.

Pretty sheets, hmmmmm now that's an idea! Sheets are a whole lot cheaper than curtains.

When we bought our first house, which was actually a mobile home, I bought a bunch of flannel sheets in the colors I wanted, took measurements on paper, and then went to my mom's to have her make us all new curtains. I would still have them except they were too small/big for our current house so I just left them behind. People were constantly asking where I bought my curtains. lol Sheets are not only cheaper but much easier to clean than reg. curtains.

ummmmmmmm.....next time, Howard, wash curtains on cold or warm temp. and hang to dry. If you must use dryer, use delicate or warm setting and not as long. This is why I always look for the care instructions on anything I buy so I know how to wash/dry them when time comes. Least now you have some pretty pillows.

Well, like it or not, that's what they are there for. Had you read the label, you would still have curtains instead of pillow cases. Stick with the blinds and buy some sheets you like and have them sewn into curtains. Just need to flip over one edge a few inches and sew a straight line for the rod. Would help to sew some weights into the bottom as well so they don't billow out as much when you open windows.

OH NO!! I think you topped ironing with a cool iron...LOL. Wow...think it was the whole combination there...you probably should have washed those curtains in a much cooler temperature and the same with the dryer and yes, for not so long. I don't even worry about doing laundry in a laundromat..LOL...all these years to save money I do all my own laundry in my own washing machine...the bathtub...then hang things up on the clotheslines I have in the bathroom--like I said....to save money.

Oh no, so sorry that happened to you. I would think it could have been any of the things you mentioned. Some you might not can wash they may need to go to the cleaners. It could have been the hot water or the hot dryer or they dried way too long. Not sure if you read how to launder them when or even before you bought them but that is a good thing to check out. I also like the mini blinds myself but curtains are nice at times.

Hi Howard, sorry about your curtains. Your very first mistake, as others have told you, is the washing with hot water...I use cold water for everything and also be very careful what you put in the dryer...I have been known to shrink the crap out of my daughter's sweaters:-( Maybe you should have hung them to dry...but then there is the ironing:-( Hope you didn't pay big bucks for you curtains!! ~G~

Not really a lot of money but I hate those labels, tumble this, tumble that, iron with a cool iron, hot air dry - what does that mean blow on them? I'll stick with the mini blinds and ditch the mini curtains.

Oh Gosh Howard.Did you read the tag on the curtains? As there is one there just for us to read. They could of been dry clean only curtains. Well, back to new curtains and read the tag on them. My roommate was going to wash mine and I yelled NO dry clean only. The other one cold water and warm drier. take out when dry or me when still a little damp. If I can iron I do and Hang back up. NO NO really Hot water or a hour in Hot drier. YOur friend onlydia

A good thing to keep in mind regarding laundromat dryers is that they all work differently, some run hot, some run cold, so I always just put in the one coin for one cycle and then check to see how my wash is doing. This also allows me to pull out items that dry quickly before they get fried.

Haha!! I think you should have the curtains dry cleaned and not just washed in the machine...I always check for care instructions before washing fabrics that aren't cotton. It's too bad that this happened to you though. The story is funny, but I feel bad for you. All that money down the drain..

Hi howard! You poor thing! You left them in the dryer way too long! First of all, I don't know what the material the that the curtains were made out of, but I do know that they should never have been in the dryer for more than a few minutes! I don't ever put my curtains in the dryer at all for that very reason! I just hang them on the rack to dry! I have the mini blinds with the curtains! I wouldn't even put my clothes in the dryer for 56 minutes! That is way too long for anything to dry! My kitchen curtains are really delicate so I can't dry or iron them! My livingroom curtains are sheers and the same for them! My bedroom curtains I still would never put in the dryer! It is ok, you didn't know! Just buy a new pair and the next time you decide to wash them take them home WET and hang them up to dry! It will be alot safer that way! Don't give up on having curtains! They make the room look much warmer and nicer! You can have blinds with the curtains. That's what I do!
