I just saw a commercial on tv where people on medicaid or food stamps, can get a cellphone free with some many free minutes per month and voice mail service (USA)the gave the phone number I didn't catch it, but the website to apply is www.safelinkwireless.com
personally I don't have a cellphone and I would not pay the extra money to get one,
is there anyone out there that doesn't have a cellphone,
is there anyone out there that could benefit from this link?

I have a cell phone strictly for emergencies. I do not qualify for free service. I have a $10.00 a month cellphone, a decent Nokia, no frills, no contracts. I have not given the number out to anyone as I only want to use it if I am not close to my land line.

Oh wow they need this sort of thing for canada since if you are low income and need assistance they do not consider a telephone a neccessity which I think it really very stupid. A telephone is a neccessity since we use it to wait for employers phone calls and if we are in need of medical help. but anyways I have a cell phone and could not imagine not having one.

Well yea. I think the government really needs to reevaluate their policies because of how much a phone is in demand. Having just a basic phone would not cost them that much and at least we could get a job easier. I have always made sure I at least had a cell phone for these reasons. and I usually live out of town and only just recently got a vehicle so it was harder for me to get to things. almost 3 yrs ago I went on social assistance and as they always do they wanted to go after my daughter's father for child support. Well the lady asked me if he had ever said he would marry me I told her no and she explained to me why she asked and I could not believe what i heard, At that point(it has been changed since) if he had said he would marry me I would have been ineligable for assistance and he would have had to pay my way til I found work!!! It was one of the rules when social assistance first started and they had not changed it. So this goes to show that the government needs to look into the policies they have in place.

When we were living in ontario we had this problem.. we couldnt afford a phone cause we had no job, but we couldnt find jobs cause employers had no way to contact us!! and social assistance wouldnt help us, because we were living in a housing unit that was already full of people. it was a bad cycle.

Four of the five people in my home have a cellphone because we no longer have a landline. The youngest child is only 9 and doesn't yet have a cellphone but will as soon as he is in his teens. I feel it is beneficiail, not only to them but to us as well. We can get in touch with them whenever we need to.

I'm sure there are alot of people out there that may be able to benefit from this offer you have provided that you seen in a commercial. I just have a cheap prepaid phone to use. I can make calls but never do. I mainly use mine for texting my husband when he is away from home. It is alot cheaper for me that way.

Cellphones these days are so ubiquitous it is hard to imagine one without a cellphone. Personally, I have lived without a cellphone for a number of years. I did not need one since I was jobless and just worked around the house doing chores. Cheers!!

I tried but it is not in my area yet. We’re sorry, but SafeLink Wireless does not currently offer Lifeline Service in your area. We are currently offering service in parts of Tennessee, Florida, Massachusetts and Virginia, with plans to begin offering service soon in the States listed below.
SafeLink Wireless Service is coming soon to...
Alabama Connecticut
New Hampshire Delaware
New York D. of Columbia
North Carolina Georgia
Pennsylvania
So I guess I am out of luck for a few more years atleast since KY is the least of their worries at giving free cell service. I appreciate the link though and I am sure others will be bale to put it to good use that will help them.

I would like one for my husband since I think he needs one when he is out working. But he says he wouldn't know how to use it and probably lose it or break it one since he has broken a few watches of his even the pocket watches since he also works in blocks and they swing sometimes and hits his upper thighs. It is great for others though can get it and I hope they take advantage of it. I don't use cell phones since I never really go anywhere.

Hi there!
I have a cellphone and I use it to stay in touch with my relatives who lives in Manila, where we used to live, where I grew up. We also use it for inquiries and reservations in my Uncle's beach resort. It is important to me because of those reasons. But I don't consider it as a necessity.

Thanks for that information! Boy, I could have used it several months ago with the ex cut off my cell phone then said he might turn it back on...he never did so he has no right complaining he can't ever get a hold of me. I will keep that link in mind for others who may need it or are in the correct area. Thanks again, you're always looking out for people.

$18 for six months only. But if you always make phone call, then I think we have to top up before six month.

Only person I know that could benefit from this link would be my sister. She doesn't have a phone, and this would make my mom feel better when she works late at night. I like to thank you for posting this discussion, because I will surely give this information to my sister. I have a cell phone, it comes in handy when I'm out and about. I saved the link to my favorites, so in case I come in contact with anyone that could benefit from it, I can give it to them.

Thanks for providing this link although I cannot make use of it since I live outside USA. However to raise a question, do you think that is morally acceptable that the Governemn provides free cellphones when there are lots of homeless people, hunger and poverty amongst poor families?

yes I think it is morally acceptable, because governments are supposed to help in many ways, the poor family will not be able to get a phone, especially in some remote areas and if there is an emergency they could die because they do not get the treatment they need right away, nobody can come by to help. So I see nothing wrong with it. So that addresses part of the need for poor families.

I checked out your link and it is not in our area yet, they come across tv here with a offer for phone service if you receive housing assistance or food stamps and it was suppose to be $24.95 a month. I called them cause I was and always since I moved in to this apartment had trouble with the phone service with the cable company as it is always dowm. Deal was you fax them your information to prove you are getting assistance and within 24 hours they got it on. I had the cable phone shut off, like they said, faxed them my information and waited. 8 days later I was still waiting but got a bill in the mail for $49. a month. When I ask why isnt' it working for about the 10th time they said TRY to get it on by the following Monday. So I called the cable company and had them turn the phone back on, I have medical problems that says I have to have a phone handy at all times here or in the car. 3 days after I turned the cable phone back on here comes ATT &T said they was here to connect the phone, I actually thought that they was looking for someone else as this was not the name of the company that I had contacted, when I found out it was them trying to connect my phone I told him sorry after 8 days of waiting I had the cable phone reconnected and he told me he was going to disconnect the cable phone and hook up theirs whether I wanted it or not. I told him that 8 days into waiting I had called them to tell them, to cancel the order and he told me I can not cancel the order once it has been placed. Now that is not a good thing to tell me, as I get riled sometimes when people are trying to force something on me I dont' want.I litterly had to threaten to call the cops on him if he continued to try and disconnect my phone. When I called about the bill, that it had never been turned on, they said once I put an order in for it it can't be canceled. DUHHHHHHH, can't be, so you are forced to use their service and have no right to change your mind, they7 said they would not cancel the bill and I WOUld pay them 6 months of service no matter what. Well I hung up nd called the Utilites Commission and they did not like what I was telling them. I have heard no more from this phone service.
I know this veered away from you topic but these companies like ATT&T are putting out this service but do not tell you who owns the company, (them) and once they get your information they run with it.
I looked the site over and as I once was a tracfone user before I went to Cricket, the phone they show is being given away now if you buy minutes at the Dollar Store and it does not tell you how many minutes you get but you can buy more mimutes from tracfone. Ten 15 minutes free any more don't even get you to talk to someone as seems everyone has to put you on hold now adays and your time would be run out before you could get to even talk to a real person. These programs may be ok if you just put it in your car for emergency perpuses but I think they are all linked to some company that will make money off it and really not interested in you.

That's pretty crazy they are now giving away cellphones and stuff. I mean that's the only phone i have is a cell phone, i don't have a home phone. Which my wife still wants a homephone considering that we have a child and could someday have to call 911 and stuff. Ya never know, better safe than sorry. I think that is a great idea for older people though.

I need a cell phone because I don't live at home with my parents anymore so I need it to be able to call them and talk to them. I think I've become attached to my phone because it's how I get in contact with my boyfriend and other friends when I'm not with them. It's convenient because I don't have to keep change and memorize phone numbers to use a pay phone whenever I want to call someone.
