I am a soap freak! I love using antibacterial and strong soaps for cleaning. I also love using lysol and many other disinfectants. I have read though that these cleaning agents are bad for the environment. Do you have any suggestions on what I can use for laundry, disinfecting floors and washing dishes. I read about baking soda, and it works well on cleaning but am not sure if it can effectively disinfect. Any tips?

Clorox is putting out an earth friendly cleaning product that actually works!! I bought a bottle of their all purpose cleaner (the stuff that is in a little bottle and you add it to the larger bottle and add your own water) and figured that it would be a waste of money, and I found that it was as good as or even better than the chemical based cleaners that I have been using.
I can't use many of the chemical based cleaners as I have severe asthma which was caused by breathing my Mom's second hand smoke (she smoked for the 17 years that I lived with her), so many of the chemicals that I used to use are out of the question.
You can also find tea oil at the health food stores or some of the markets that sell organic products and foods. You could also get a San Francisco Herb Company catalog they carry a lot of that kind of stuff along with herbs and teas.

we will never get rid of disinfectants and detergents, unless we sacrifice cleanliness so as to be earth-friendly at all times. all our lives we have used them for cleaning, what would life be without them?

You need to be looking at natural products were possible katemeow. One of the problems is that in general today people use so much chemicals or products containing chemicals and the bugs become resistant to them which in turn means stronger and stronger chemicals have to be sed to defeat those awful bugs. Many of the products which are on sale now are not good for the environment and even one person reducing the amount they use can have a huge effect. Besides many of the natural produces are cheaper so there is a bonus there.
Vinegar is a great product and can be used in so many ways. For example you can get one of those spray bottles and out some vinegar diluted with water and use that in many areas of the home. We have one in the bathroom and another in the outside wash area. Having them right there means we use them regularly and there is no soap or scum built up. Another is eucalyptus oil and as you mentioned tea tree oil. Not sure where you could get them in your country but they are both readily available in the supermarkets here in Australia. You do not need a large volume either as for many uses they can be diluted in water.
We also use natural soap, i.e. sunlight or velvet soap. Both have been around for as long as I can remember and best of all they are multi-use and nor do they have any additives. I always have a cake of it in my bag when I am driving interstate because not only can I use it when I have a shower or even wash my hands. Not all the soaps that are provided in those rest areas/truck stops are skin friendly which I why I prefer to use my own, Also if I accidentally spill some food on my clothes when I am driving, I can wash it out using the sunlight soap and that is much better than leaving it till I get back home. If I am away for a week, the stain will have set by then and nothing gets it out.
From memory one of the members started a discussion in the past few weeks on vinegar and its uses. You might like to do a search, using vinegar, and find that one as it could have some things in there that will help you out.
In the meantime I will see what I can find out as my partner does have all sorts of these things tucked away somewhere. As much as we can we do use natural products and those which are chemical free.
