I was commissioned by a friend to do freelance copywriting and I did it for three weeks. It was fun but stressful. I was made to write 7 articles per day (she gave me the topic for the day at around 1:00pm and I was made to submit it at 12 midnight!). It was tough considering the limited time. I just stopped because I wasn't paid according to what we have agreed especially that we never had a written contract. She capitalized on my work but never gave what was due to me. It was a lesson learned. I will continue writing though this year but never for her. I hope to find one through the net. I guess you also try this because it's fun.

Well there are legitimate websites where you can get paid for freelance writing and they only require a sample of your work to help others evaluate you before hiring your services. I have a regular job and I really don't get much time for free lance copy writing or writing articles. It's sad to hear about what your "friend" did. Some people just put everything on the line for their own cause, I know that because I too have suffered by the hands of a friend but the amount was really huge, suffice to say, I cut of all means of contact with him.

That's also sad. I don't understant why such kind of people have to ruin friendship in exchange for a sum of money. Aren't they greedy for money?

In October I was forced to make a drastic decision, get a part-time job somewhere local, or make money some other way to pay for my college tuition. I then went to the internet, and found you could make money writing. I've always loved writing so I went to 4 sites: Getafreelancer, Scriptlance, Odesk, and Elance. I started out there, writing for any job that would hire me. The pay wasn't that great, $2-4 per article, and it was also challenging. The stress of due dates, being swamped with writing and exams, and still trying to be that inner-kid I still want to be true to by going out and having fun was hard.
For about 4 years, I've played a game called Runescape. I wanted to be able to make money writing about this game I had a passion for. After tons of looking online, I found the best job that suits me. A technology site, willing to pay $10 per article if hired. I applied, and with my great experience in the game, I was accepted to write for the Runescape topic! One week later, I was promoted to Contributing Editor, working right next to the Managing Editor, and I even get to control and edit every article that goes into my Runescape topic! On top of that, I get $3 for every edit I do. Its truely a dream job, especially for a youngin like me, just starting out in the online writing business.
I must say, if you have an interest in any certain topic, and you can find a job writing about it, its the greatest feeling! I even got accepted to write for the Environmental Channel, too, writing about animals and habitats.
So take a look at the site if you want. The link is below and you can check out the site to see if your interest is on there.
http://www.brighthub.com/video-games/mmo/articles/19215.aspx
If you have an interest on the site and some writing experience, I would suggest applying to be a writer. $10 an article is rare, and if you can make it writing about what you love, you could really supplement your income.
Hope everyone else seeking to freelance write has some good luck starting out their freelance writing careers like I had!

Well, I am a freelance writer and have been doing this for about 7 years now. I am a work-at-home mom who mostly write for local magazines and newspapers here in my country. But I also write for some sites in the internet that pay when people visit my writings.
It's a sad fact that there are unscrupulous clients out there who take advantage of writers, especially when the work is done over the internet. I've had my share of disappointments too.
But if you're really keen on pursuing the craft, just move on and look for other opportunities. There are lots out there. You just have to keep trying to find them. If you need writing leads, you can pm.
Good luck :)

I have been freelance writing for 6+ years now and have managed to make a good montly income. I do write for ehow for passive income, which I bought this book to learn how to increase my earning and it is working great. The book I bought is http://www.e-junkie.com/ecom/gb.php?ii=121991&c=ib&aff=37351. This book tells you how to make passive income, which is how I am able to double my earning. I also use it for other residual earning sites.
As for Gatafreelance, I used them twice and found that most people want something for nothing. RAC is a good place to look and you can apply for jobs at www.freelancewritinggigs.com. that site has job postings every day Monday through Friday.
If you want to make some passive income while you are loking for clients, you should sign up for ehow and use the book so that you can start creating good passive income right away.
Nice to meet everyone here.

What a terrible experience you had to go through - those lessons should not have to be learned the hard way, particularly when dealing with someone who is your friend!
I've been a freelance writer since 1999, and have found the bidding sites (like getafreelancer.com, etc.) to be the worst avenue to take. The main reason is because you're not getting paid what you're worth because there's SO MANY willing to work for pennies on these sites. I found a job similar to what I was paid $500 to do ... and people were bidding $15 just so they'd get the job. It was crazy.
I use the following sites to obtain work:
(1) http://www.freelancewritinggigs.com
(2) http://www.journalismjobs.com
(3) http://www.mediabistro.com
(4) http://www.writersweekly.com
(5) http://www.sunoasis.com
(6) http://www.poewar.com
(7) http://www.freelancewritng.com
(8) http://www.absolutewrite.com
Lately, the bulk of my income has come from writing for DemandStudios.com. I keep that as my "steady gig" because there's constant work and I don't have to worry about the pace slipping if I can't find other gigs to work on. I used to have good luck with AssociatedContent.com and Helium.com, but the competition has gotten really stiff and they've gotten really picky about what they accept.

I've always been curious about copywriting and don't know much about it. I would imagine it'd be hard to keep to a deadline. I have a rule, if it isn't fun, don't do it, lol.

I never do it, and maybe not keen into it. Because my english vocab is sux. lol. If I have a good grammar maybe I will do it no matter the deadline is, just treat is as a hobby and express your thinking and imagination. But for deadline job, I already used to it, maybe I trained as designer that so many clients has a great demand on this and that which need to change. I always finish it on time...yes it really stressful indeed, no enough sleep. But I just like my job, so I won't regret it.

Writing is fun for it's there that we can express everything but it also need a lot of passion. Writing is not for everyone. Lucky are those who have inborn talents for writing.

Freelance writing can be fun and profitable at times. It depends on many factors. Mostly, IT IS BETTER TO TRY LOCAL MAGAZINES OR SITES AS GETAFREELANCER.COM. I have not tried it but read that it can be a great way to earn if you stick to editorial guidelines. You must never be working for friends like yours who cheated you and made advatage of your hardwork.

I believe my friend who commissioned me was getting her projects from getafreelancer.com. It was really a lesson. But taking the positive side of it, I learned many ways on how to copywrite.

I had this problem too. I was working for a woman, and at the beginning, everything was fine. But after awhile, she stopped paying me, or she paid me less than she'd originally quoted me. I had to stop working for her.

We rode the same plane.LOL. it's a good thing that you stopped working for her. They take advantage of us. It's definitely bad andthe karma wouldn't be good. You better look for other sites and I check for other paying sites listed above by one of the commentors.

It was really a lesson for me. I should have been more prudent and not too trusting to friends. In a way, I also have earned something positive, that is, I learned how to copywrite.

Hi dorisday1971,
I'm sorry you had that experience with your friend. You probably know that you can get fairer clients, right? If you're still keen on pursuing paid writing, I wish you all the very best with it.
I've tried freelance writing - did it for a big part of last year. I wouldn't go as far as saying I had fun because I don't believe writing for other people is my vocation in life. I'd rather be writing and creating for myself.
Some people have recommended you join GetaFreelancer. Do bear in mind that it's a bidding site that has a lot of very low offers on there (like $1 for a 500-word article). Some have gotten better deals on there so you might be ok, but be warned.
You could check out the following sites for writing jobs:
- freelancewritinggigs.com
- allfreelancewritingjobs.com
- jobs.problogger.com
- bloggerjobs.biz
You might know of these already.
take care...

Well, as I understand the copywritting is easier than the article writting work. However, I have never tried any of this. I thought of writting articles to earn extra income but I could not find the reliable source which would pay me without cheating me. So I did not start article writting. I personally feel that I would be able to write good articles if I get some guidelines but still I am looking for such site.
I feel that we should try to read the articles of others and try to learn. I am also looking for the site which would really pay for re-writting the articles.

Both are not easy actually. In copywriting, it's not about the copy-paste thing. You have to write an orginal article for it is checked through copyscape. there are lots of sites which need re-writers. Just keep on surfing and I'm sure you will find one. good luck.

It's not easy to get a project from getafreelancer.com because many are bidding for one project. You would be very lucky if you will be chosen from among the many bidders. Just keep your faith, you will find one in due time. Good luck and God bless.
