WEll I have not had many issues with dad and his hewalth or attitude as of late. (knock on wood) He has his Heart check up on the 20th of this month as well. He needs refills for all his meds so that I feel is the only reason he agreed to go at this time. Talked with the man taking care of his farem as well and things are great this winter with no broken/rotten windows or water pipes freezing. His stove did die and the gas company was called to replace a regulator and it's working like a charm once again. I shaved dad's head and face today. I told him he looks 80, not 100 now that he is clean shaven etc. So how are your parents dpoing as of late? Any health issues/concerns?

Glad your Dad is doing good. My Mother is 91 and still lives alone (has for the past 17 1/2 years). She was having problems being tired all the time, sleeping lots, etc. The DR checked her VIT D in her blood and found it was almost nonexistent! He put her on a large dose capsule once a week for 8 weeks, then she'll start taking them once a week, every other week. I can really see an improvement in her! She was walking outside yesterday for awhile without a cane. She was going all over the house without her cane. She doesn't walk fast, and she watches how she walks and where she goes. She is being careful not to fall. When she doesn't feel good, she uses Daddy's old walker in the house. And she has her cane to use when we go out. I've noticed also that she isn't sleeping as much, although she does lay around lots. But, she told me to wait and see what I'd do at 91. She'll be 92 in March. She's really in fairly good health for 91 1/2. She never is sick, takes her flu shot every fall. She has to take a BP medication and one for thyroid. Other than that, nothing much else.

I've been dads caregiver for 5 years or so now. He had a few strokes without telling anyone years ago. He did not show up at Bingo one day and a couple of his Bingo Buddies drove to his farm finding him lying in the snow on a cold February morning. He'd had a stroke and fell not being able to get up for almost 12 hours. Luckily he has always dressed way too warm in layers so he did not get hypothermia etc. Good to hear your mom is doing well at 91. Dad barely walks even in the house. He has gotten very lazy and refuses to do any pohysical therapy anymore. So he is very slow and has to use a walker to get around. Not a lot of fun I teell you. My dad sleeps maybe 19 or more hours daily. He will do a couple word search puzzles then sleep the rest of the day basically. His attention span has gotten almost non exsaistence so he dopesn't watch TV for more than a few minmutes at a time.

She realized years ago she couldn't get around like she used to. So she is very careful how she walks, never gets in a hurry and holds when she's walking down steps. My Daddy's cousin fell in her home when she was 93 (she was healthy), and broke her hip and didn't live long at all after that. They say it's very hard for an older person to break a bone and survive.

We don't get any special treatment here in the States at that milestone.
Maybe from family and friends is all.

When my mom turned 80, I arranged for her to get birthday greetings from the mayor, our local MP, and the PM. But I had to put her name forward, it wasn't automatic.

Thanks. I am surprised that some type of health issue hasn't arisen in
many months now. Hope it keeps up this way for a long time as well.

My dad is fine. He is at home, still being ornery, and still gets around fine. Glad things are going well for you and your dad.

He can't get around with a cane. He needs and uses a walker. When he does walk, which is just from room to room a couple times daily. He has gotten very lazy not wanting to walk or do any type of physical therapy. Oh well at least he is healthy for the time being.

Grandpa Bob, I was wondering yesterday if you where OK I had not come across any posts for a few days and I missed you.
You did see my post of what my dad did to me on Christmas eve, this will tell you how he is http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1801504.aspx?p=1#2_18692173
You do not have to respond to it.
You already know what pain in the butt mom can be even in the nursing home.
I had to get the director or nurses and social worker involved again with mom about that employee who was trying to get mom to move in with her last year. Well this time the employee took mom out of the facility with out my permission. They cannot stop mom from going out but they do have a policy against employee's taking the residents out if there is not a planned function.
I am afraid this woman is trying to get mom's money and influence mom into living with her again. I think this woman is bad news.
In my opinion I do not have parents. I wish I had come to this realization years ago and divorced them sooner I would have saved myself a lot of heartache.
I am so proud that you are sticking in there and taking care of your dad. I am so glad that there are grown children who still do that for their parents. I on the other had am coming to my limit. How much abuse can one person take?

Glad to hear that your Dad is doing good my friend. My mom and dad are gone so I do not have any parents living anymore, but both of my husbands are still alive and doing well. His Mom lives in AZ yr. round and we just seen her on Christmas. His dad and wife live in Eatonville, WA and are playing Snowbirds in AZ for now. We just learn to take things one day at a time and learn to appreciate each passing moment they are here with us as well.

Sounds like you're doing a great job taking care of your Dad.
My parents are doing ok since the last time I spoke with them which was Christmas Day. My Dad has had type 2 diabetes for years and is doing really well with that. He did have a recent eye operation and will be going in for another one soon. He is still going strong though.
I'm having health issues with my hubby though as he has type 2 diabetes and is still in denial and not following the program, he also has high cholesterol and has recently had a bad bout of gout. He still has actually (two weeks going on three) and is getting it looked at again tommorrow since he's run out of pain killers. He is due to travel next Monday for a month and is not on the mend. I won't go there with his smoking either, as he started up again and then said he was quitting on New Years day and then turned around and changed his mind again. At least he's thinking about it lol

The eye issue you mention, glaucoma or cataracts?
Hope things get better for all in your family.
And soon too I hope.
I also smoke and CAN'T quit.
I've stopped many times but have yet quit.
It's all a m,ental thing meaning one has to want to quit I guess before succesful.

Hi Grandpa Bob! I am very glad to know that all is well with your dad. My father is doing great too, thank you for asking. My dad loves being with all his grandchildren and that is why we always make it a point that every Sunday, all the grandkids spend the whole day with him. He is very much in his happy face when the children are around. I don't have my own children but I personally fetch all my nieces and nephews just to be sure that they will all be with my dad every Sunday. I am just happy that he has no health issues and I am hoping that he will stay healthy for a long time. He is 67 years old and will be turning 68 this June.
Take care always..Have a nice day!

Well hey there Grandpa Bob! Nice to hear from you! Was wondering
where you'd been! Happy New Year to you and the family! I hope
you had a wonderful holiday time, as I am sure that you did!
And I am very happy to see that your Dad is looking so well
and hearing that he is doing as well as he looks! That is some
wonderful news! Was kind of wondering where you had disappeared
to! Must have been having lots of fun with all that miserable
weather that you've been having! We finally got a bit of it
here, but nothing to compare with what you've been dealing with!
I really am glad that everything is ok! Send my best to the
family! Missed you! Glad to see you back!

Thanks and Happy New Year to you and yours as well. I just needed/wanted a break was all. So I took off 8 days from here is all. I read emails and all but didn not start anything and responded to just a few since the 23rd of Dec actually. Felt good to have some ME time. Since then we have gotten another foot or more of snow. Got some rain on Saturday and that took away some of the grounbd cover of snow. Then we got 4 more inches in the afternoon. Just windy and cold ASunday and getting really cold tonight as well. I am hunkered down as I have to take the wife to the Dr at 8 a.m. Monday. Ugghh!

am glad your dad still doing fine at his age, I lost my Dad when his 81 due to hypertension while attending mass. They said thats extra ordinary to die inside the church while attending mass, it's a consolation knowing he's blessed to die in the house of God. I lost my mom right after she turned 93. You're much luckier to still have your Dad. Happy New Year.

That is great to hear. I am very happy that he is doing well. My dad passed away in 1985 but mom remarried and her new husband also passed away. She is now remarried again and they are doing okay, but they both have health issues. Mom has back problems and my step-dad is a diabetic but both are in fairly good health.

I am happy that your dad is okay. And it is good that he has so many years of living here on earth and he was able to spend it with you. You must be a good child because you personally take care of your father. You will be blessed for that kindness.
I have still my both parents they are 60 and 66 years old. I am living away from them. Island away because I have my work in another place. But when vacation time I was able to visit them. Just for the Christmas vacation I went home together with my son to celebrate it with them. And I am glad that I have one sister living with them and I have 2 sisters who are our neighbor so they can take care of my parents especially in their times of needs.

Glad to hear your dad is doing well. Christmas was hard for us this year cause it was the first without my dad. I put some flowers on his grave, which was nice. I'm glad it's close enough that I can ever so often. My husband's parents are too far away and I know it hurts him.
My mom is the same as ever. She has health problems, some they aren't even sure about, but is holding her own. She put a boycott on doctors for a while...lol.
