What to do about this dog??

Well recently I have been posting about my pregnant dog. ( we think shes knocked up at least) Well the people upstairs that had the male dog, have up and left. Since the first we have heard this dog howling upstairs and scratching at the floor. So the other day my bf broke into the house to find it empty and found the dog and the cat locked alone in the bathroom with no food and covered in pee and poo. So knowing that our dogs obviously get along sharing a yard for the past 6 months, we decided to bring the dog down and feed him. We fed him 3 bowls of food last night and then gave him another bowl today in the morning. We have called the landlords and the people who lived upstairs and they said they are coming back for the dog. They haven't yet so we are still trying to find him a home.
This is so sad. We felt like we should take him in instead of listening to him howl and being alone up there as well as the cat. We don't have the heart to leave him at the pound as he wouldn't be happy in a cage.
So I guess we took him in for now until we find a place. We have thought about leaving it tied to the door to the new place of these people. But then again it is -40 outside. So we can't do that.
Have you ever taken in a abandon dog?

That is sad. Some people have no conscience. I think I would try some local animal rescue organizations and see if they can help you. It is better for the dog to be safe in a cage then outside in the cold or getting hit by a car or something. Just do what you can do. Maybe you can find a no kill shelter.

I hurt just reading this! You have listed all of your options! I think by now, in your mind you know that anyone that would leave a dog and cat abandoned in a bathroom, will not EVER be coming back for them! And I think it would be cruel & unusual punishment to leave a dog tied to a door, at anytime, knowing what you know about the people....and the weather conditions. The dog would live (if large)for approx. 20 minutes! If you can't care for him, can't home him, at least try a rescue center before the pound! You do not mention the demise of the cat.
Please search, but I think that a female can get pregnant shortly after the birth of pups, so you would be facing having one or the other neutered.
Yes, I would never turn away an abandoned dog, and we end up with many on this Island as people lose them at the Ferry, and just leave....some come back, some don't!
But I am hearing of it on the news all the time, animals being abandoned because of the economical times, or that is the excuse used. Good luck, my dear!

Keely...Thank you, my dear! I really appreciate your lovely gesture! I am wondering how things are going in this situation? Are you homing the dog and cat! Sometimes rescue centers having "fostering" programs and can assist you with the purchase of food! Congratulations on your BIG, BIG animal heart!

Well I posted a few adds on the net and had a few people come and see the dog. We gave it to a family with 2 children ages 8 and up. The dog seemed so happy to play with the kids so we thought it was right. The landlords called the pound and had the kitty picked up.
Your welcome thank you for your responses. :)

Keely...Once again, Thank you for the update...I do so worry about things like this and spend lots of time wondering how I can make a difference in the plight of these poor animals! I am so happy for the dog, and hope the kitty's life turns out as good! Kudos to you, my friend!

There has to be an animal officer where you live. Ask around and call him up. this is animal abuse and neglect. Truthfully, this is your landlords problem...not yours. You should not have to feed or fork out money for someone elses pet. You should not even have to go thru the bother of finding a new owner...it is not your pet....not your problem! I understand that you care about the animal but it really is not your responsibiity...bottom line. You took it on and those responsible are letting you.Is the dog licenced and has he had his shots? If you take him in , then you are responsible for all that and the cost. What you need to do is report the owners for abandonment and animal cruelty. You need to be pro-active on this one.

I have found dogs and cats on the street when I was a kid, nowadays you mostly find them in dog shelters What is it with your neighbors, why couldn't they put him up for adoption?
We moved to a different city about an hour away from the old place when I was about 12 and we had a family dog everybody was really fond of.However,we couldn't take him with us at that point so we had to leave him in the backyard with food and water and neighbors keeping an eye on him(it was summer). Everything was well, took us a couple of days to settle in but the neighbors kept telling us that he was very upset and wouldn't touch his food cause he thought we abandoned him. So my dad went to get him and the dog that was so scared of riding in the car jumped right in with no doubt! An hour long drive-gas money, the look on your dog's face-priceless!

If I was you I would keep the dog and give up on finding a new home for him! But I love all animals and can never abadon an animal. I have three dogs and two cats of my own and it is like they are my kids. Hopefully the owners of the animals get some sort of fine or jail time for what they did because that is just cruel to leave them locked up in a room on their own. But yes I have taken in abadoned animals (see two cats)!

HiKeely,
Im glad you have taken the dog in to feed him....how could the owners have left him and the cat like that?
You definitely did the right thing and the previous owners should not have the dog back as they are irresponsible. The are breaking the law by leaving the dog and cat like that.
If you cant keep the dog yourself, then I hope you will take him to a rescue centre where they will keep him happy and not put him down. Poor thing. I wish i could take them for you.
Let us know how you get on

I would call the vet and report those people so they get charged with abandonment. That is rediculous! I feel bad for that cat too. Those people should be tied up outside for an afternoon in that weather and see how they feel after that.. think they would do that again? I think not!

Those poor animals. I think those people deliberately left them there to die. And yes my family has taken a lot of dogs. I could remember one time when there was a lot of fireworks around and all the dogs were scared and we found a strange dog in our house. I'm really kind to animals especially dogs so I played with it and it became our own for awhile. Turned out it was the neighbor's dog (2 houses away) and we gave it back. It felt so good inside to actually help people.

i think you are doing a wonderful job. taking care of a homeless dog is really an appreciating work. and since you have looking for a home for him. whydon't you keep him with you. as you have so much sypathy for him?i live in india. here on streets you will find quite a few stray dogs. and i think every family here feeds them. so you can't ask me alone that question. here everybody does that. but it is not the probelm sometimes they come across the motors and sometimes they bite people. but the problem is not that alarming here.

You might say the 2 younger ones we have right now are abandoned. The creature we got them from was gonna drown them. Horrid woman.
Those neighbors are bad people. You did a great thing. I know it's rough, trying to cope with another pet. You have a good heart. It wouldn't work to tie it up to their door. They'd just leave it out there to die of starvation and of cold. Look what they already did.
Have you talked to the police about how you found the dog and cat? Those people need punished.
