Salad with dinner?

Do you serve a salad with every dinner? Does the salad substitute a veggie, or is it just an addition to the meal?
I don't often serve salad, since hubby doesn't eat it, but I've decided the kids and I are going to start having a small salad with every decent meal (excluding meals like hot dogs, or nuka meals). Tonight was our first night having salad along with a meal. We had baked chicken, rice, a veggie combo of carrots broccoli and cauliflower, and the salad. That's a whole lot of veggies... but I don't think you can ever have too many.
How often do you have a salad with dinner? What sort of dinner would you have a salad with?

I have tried to incorporate salad into as many dinners as possible but the other half keeps changing his mind about what he likes and doesn't like. He recently decided that he likes a bunch of salad veggies that he used to hate so I went ahead and made a huge garden salad. Then he says, 'but I don't like cucumber' and wouldn't have any of it. I usually just by bagged mixed greens and add carrots, cucumbers etc and have it myself at lunch and occasionally with dinner. The nice thing about salad is that it goes with most any dinner.

He sounds like a bit of a pain, lol. My husband is worse, he basically won't eat veggies at all unless I force him. If I put them in something like a soup or casserole he'll eat them or pick around them, but he'd never just eat a salad.

He's usually pretty good about sucking it up and eating whatever I make - he always eats green beans even though he groans about it. But it's the random hatred of things that he always liked and the deciding he loves something he's always hated that drives me nuts. He has maintained that he is "allergic" to salmon for the entire time I've known him. I finally made him try it, promising to drive him to the hospital if need be, and now he's decided he loves salmon. It's really hard to keep up with his flip flopping.

Hey kats! I love to have salad. But, I don't have salad with
veggies too. I usually have it in place of salad, at least
for myself. My boyfriend likes to have a veggie too. I am fine
with just a salad. It will depend on what I am having. I will
make a steak, potato or rice and then have a salad. With the
high cost of produce I find it is hard to get decent produce
and it doesn't stay too well for too long so I don't always
have the fixings for salad unless I get it fresh. And as I had
said in another discussion, I don't go to the grocery store
every week sometimes, especially in the winter so I might not
always have salad in the house. That's why I make sure I have
plenty of veggies in the freezer at all times!

Yeah I can understand that. I don't get much in the way of salad topping type veggies due to the cost. This week I bought the bag of lettuce, a cucumber, and a couple tomatoes. Next week I might do something different since I can get tired of cucumbers and tomatoes quick.

We don't have salads with each meal. While I love them I'd get bored if I had to eat them every dinner. Besides, my guy isn't big on salads. He grumbles whenever I fix them. LOL And when I do fix salads I usually count that as a veggie. But as for dinners I fix salads with would be: Steak, baked potatoes and salad; homemade pizza and salad; pasta, garlic bread and salad. A woman I know made a wonderful salad one night for a dinner I attended. It was unusual because it was all shredded. So you had a "taste" of everything in each bite. Delicious. She had lettuce, carrots, cucumber, red peppers, tomatos, green peppers. It was a pretty salad too with the peppers and being shredded so it looked like confetti. Made a great dish to go with our meal.

We love salad. Lots of times we have it as a meal - all the veggies you can put in it, and then adding a boiled egg. And my husband loves to put grated cheese on his. We often have salad with veggies only, or we have maybe a meat, potatoes, some kind of peas or beans and a salad. To me, there are also times of the year when salad is best. Right now, we don't have too many salads. The lettuce just doesn't seem as good this time of year. Now, if we go out for a steak or something, we will always have a salad. And, if we eat in a place where you serve yourself, we usually make a nice salad.

We eat salad almost every night! My family loves salad, & seems to never get tired of it. We usually buy the bagged salad & we add cheese, croutons, ham, bacon bits, and always have ranch dressing.

It's really not that bad as far as prep work. What I did was buy a bag of pre shredded lettuce, then I got a couple tomatoes and a cucumber. I sliced the tomatoes and cucmbers and put them in seperate tupperware containers. Now when I make a salad I grab a handful of the lettuce and a couple tomatoes and cucumbers, then toss on the dressing. It'll keep for a few days in the fridge that way in seperate containers.

We don't have salad with dinner very often. I always make vegetables but just not salad much. The kids like to eat salad and so does my husband. it just tends to be a pain in the butt to buy all the stuff for a salad. Usually what i make is enough for us so a salad would just not get eaten very well.

Nah we do not have salad with meals, especially not if we are having veg already. The only time that we really eat salad is in the summer if it is hot, we will have a chicken salad or we have it with a barbecue. I only buy salad also if it is on offer or not too expensive, no one in my house is that fond of it anyway.

In the summer months I serve a bowl of salad with most meals. We grow our own salads, so there's plenty. I love salad and could eat it all day, but I also serve it because it's healthy and it's a cheap 'filler' when it's home produced.
In the winter I don't serve it much because I have to buy it, but just recently I've had an urge for something fresh and have served it a couple of times. I think it must be all the excesses of the Christmas season telling me I need to eat more sensibly!

Hi Katsmeow, we usually have vegetables with every meal. If it's Western style, it's a salad - mixed vegetables, lettuce (romaine, iceberg, butterhead) or cucumber. If it's oriental or Asian style, we often have a dish of stir fried vegetables, or vegetable soup.

We eat salad about 2-3 times a week with dinner. If we do it more, we become bored and it goes uneaten. I usually have a veggie side dish too. My daughter won't eat salad and this gives her an option. I usually start with bagged lettuce mix and add cheese and whatever veggies I have and also croutons. We also like sunflower seeds on top once in awhile too. The key for us it to make the salad a little differently each time. We like to mix up the dressings too so we don't get bored.

I was a bit worried about the whole getting bored part, but I doubt I can ever get bored with salad. I do get bored with some of the toppings on salad, but I've never been bored of actual salad, and there have been times when I've eaten it for breakfast lunch and dinner 7 days a week (during the last 2 pregnancies).

Salad is a nice way to get your vegetables in. Lettuce really should not count as a vegetable as it doesn't have much nutritional value. It is a very good addition to a diet however as it provides satiation. The kinds of vegetables you add to your salad are a nice way to reach your daily intake (5-6 servings). Adding a healthy dressing, and even possibly a protein product such as lean chicken or soy can make a salad into a legitimate main course. The low fat content of the veggies you eat will lead you to be "fuller faster" than higher fat content dinner alternatives.

Gee, that sounds like a Good dinner to me. I hope it was as good as it sounds. Yes, that is a lot of Vegetables, but if you and your kids enjoy a Salad, then there is nothing wrong with doing this. We like having a salad with Spagetti, or when we have a Steak or something like that. I feel you can never go wrong with a Good Salad.

Through the summer we grow our own veggis so we have a salad with every meal or as a meal. In the winter, I am too cheap, I hate to buy produce. So, about one time a month I will buy salad stuff and we will have that with meals until it's gone. Otherwise, we will just have celery and carrot sticks. This does not take away the veggie with the meal. Every meal has a meat, vegetable and starch at our house.

I wouldn't recommend it. If you eat salad too often you start to hate it. It's perfect to lose weight and stuff, but seriously: Do you really like the taste of eat? I know there are a lot of different types of salad and to me they all taste the same: healthy :P
do you really like it or do you just eat it to get a full stomache?
