I would say that is just the point Austen is trying to make with her character Elizabeth, who does not want to marry for money. It is Elizabeth who chides her friend Charlotte when Charlotte accepts the minister's (Elizabeth's cousin)proposal for marriage simply because it is a good material match. Charlotte on the other hand is convinced that it is suitable for a woman to make sure she has a good financial state (marriage) over love.
Perhaps it is this quality in Elizabeth that truly attracts Darcy.
