I was reading this article and it suprised me. it said that every day in the U.S. 10 adults die from choking on food. That's kind of scary. I mean, eating is something you do every day and you don't even give it a moment's thought, but suddenly you can be eating and all of a sudden you can't breathe. I live alone, and its kind of a scary thought that if I started choking no one could help me. I guess I'm just a person who will always find something to worry about.
I did see someone choke once. I was in a cafeteria where I used to work and this guy started choking and this other guy was giving him the heimlich. He did it like 10 times and it didn't seem to be working. Someone else ran to call 911 and eventually the guy coughed it up and started breathing again, but it was kind of scary. I'm glad the man didn't die.
So it made me wonder- do you know how to do the heimlich manuever? Have you ever done it on anybody? Do you know of anyone who did it or had it done to them?
I was just wondering how common it is for people to do it.
Just my thoughts.....

i do know how to do the Heimlich manouver as it was a requirement for me when I was taking training for a job. At the time I didn't think much of it. But unfortunately I did eventually have to use it on a person under my care. The person was okay afterwards thankfully and I have a much greater appreciation for this manouverr now and think that everyone should learn it. You never know when you may need it!

Where do you work? Were you taking care of children? My sister works with kids and had to learn cpr as part of her job.
Were you scared when you had to do the heimlich? I'm glad the person was ok. I read up on how to do it online, but I'd be scared to do it for real. I hope I never have to. And I hope I never need to have it done on me!

I learned the heimlich in college as a part of the child studies I was attending to be able to work in child daycare. We didn't get a first aid diploma, but we did learn a lot of basic things you would also get when studying first aid.
This came to good use when my mom was babysitting and a little girl was choking on her food. I tried to get it out by giving her a sligh hit between the shoulderblades as is required with younger children, and if that doesn't work, you should use the heimlich. I did and thank God when I used the Heimlich she coughed it up .
I wouldn't want to even think of it what would've happened if I hadn't known the Heimlich or if I wouldn't have been able to handle instantly. I'm so glad I did as it really has saved her life.
