Today, Boyfriend and I are going to look at coffee tables. We have been looking online as well and they are not as cheap as we want them to be.
Why are they called coffee tables, anyway? And can you think of other things that do not really serve the "function" they are called?

In answer to your last question, Central Intelligence Agency leaps to mind.
But as to coffee tables, they were once a place for people to set their coffees when entertaining. Once upon a time, when people served coffee after dinner, they lived up to their names. Now, they're just places for magazines to sit and remotes to get lost.

That is what I figured about the origin of coffee tables. Now they are just what you said they are as well as for a lot of people to put up their feet on while watching TV.
Good answer with Central Intelligence Agency though. Although if we type it down, would we be on their list now?

Probably. But, chances are we already were. To be fair, I have respect for the CIA and FBI. However, I feel the organization has become to heavy for its own weight. That's a topic for another thread. Still, it sounded pithy when I typed it.

LOL. So did you start a discussion about it? I am sure a lot of responders would jump in at the chance. Thanks again, Dori.

Hello, ingramwu. We bought our table for about 90$. It would be nice to see the tables you make but China would be a long way to travel from for a lone coffee table to get to California.

So true Sisi!! Our coffee tables are being used for keeping flowers and my father's documents and a little space is used by him to keep his tea cup in the morning when he reads his newspapers and does office.

@ scoop - i told you i am as stupid as it can get!
Sisi, it's a well planned office and with each passing day one more item is being added. I fear, it doesn't get shut!

I guess for an office, the more coming in, the better, right, Mimpi?
The coffee table we ended up getting is getting used all right. A couple magazines and a few remote controls are on it even though it also has a shelf as well as two drawers.

As noted above, yesterday we saw cocktail tables and console tables. What else would they think about. So your coffee tables can also be called your dad's office who I hope is doing quite well, mimpi.

I rarely have tables in my coffee either, so it all makes perfect sense to me. Seeing as the Superbowl has just finished, I wanna know why they call it a "touchdown"?? It never looks like anyone's touching down anything really. It's more like a slam, crash or smash down of the ball followed by a GET down dance! What's up with that??

I did watch part of the Superbowl (whispers "at work") and it was one hell of a game and it got me all tense at the very end considering I knew little of the game. But isn't it interesting that it almost felt like it was a holiday that Sunday. The streets around here were almost empty and eerie.
Thanks, James.

Peter O'Toole has one of those iconic and soothing voices of all time.
Shakespeare was indeed writing the sonnet to a young man... of his youth but it has been used so much to woo girls and women that maybe that is how it has become to be.
What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet

I use mine for coffee table books and, when we have company, I put the serving tray on there which contains coffee. :-) Sometimes we'll have dinner on our coffee table while watching movie. My fiance's uncle made ours a long time ago (he made it before I met my fiance), so it's a treasured piece that we try to take good care of.

There you go, someone actually using the coffee table for coffee!!! Take good care of that treasure you got there, explorations. I am sure your fiance's uncle made it with lots of love... Thanks for sharing.

I found this on dictionary.com:
coffee table
–noun
a low table, usually placed in front of a sofa, for holding ashtrays, snack bowls, glasses, magazines, etc. The name certainly doesn't fit. Also says they are sometimes called cocktail tables. Ewww that is worse!lol
Don't really know why they call them coffee tables. Maybe you could try looking on craigs list in your area. I have found some wonderful deals.

We did check Craigslist before going to stores. Either they are not of our liking, too old, too mangled, or have been sold the minute they got posted (these are for the ones we liked!)
Thanks ersmommy and yes there are cocktail tables. I found that out when we started checking on coffee tables. Thanks!

Most of the people are not using the coffee table for the intended purpose. They use it to keep books, put on their foots while watching television and so on. Hope you don't do the same.
There are variety of coffee tables available in the market. I bought mine from malaysia.
