Time to secure those bookcases - scary

Yesterday I unpacked 6 boxes of books that my Dad had given me, mostly books that were my Mom's. I didn't really get to put them away, not sure where I can fit them, but I did stack some of them on some empty shelves. This morning during breakfast, loud thud! The corner bookcase had fallen over from the weight. Fortunately the only casualty was Naomi's toy school bus. Scary. Husband is now under marching orders to secure the bookcases TO THE WALL! Like yesterday...

I there,
I could just visualize the bookcase tumbling over as I read the title for your discussion. Sadly, you are not the first person to need a reminder that books are heavy. Imagine that!Well, as you may remember I use a wheelchair, and because I only sit at 3 feet tall while in my chair, I'm forever climbing like a toddler, to reach things. (I stress like a toddler because I'm in a chair because I have cerebral palsy and my balance isn't the best on a good day!) So, I'm attempting one of my climbing escapades to the top of my bookcase, only to discover that I've lost my balance, so in my infinite wisdom, I grabbed onto the bookcase..... Voila.....
As you have already discovered, bookcases are heavy and can be easily knocked off balance or fall over. Luckily for me, I was no worse for wear, other than a couple of bruises, and some wounded pride. Just imagine my embarrassment, when I had to explain my predicament to the friends that I sent out the sos help call to.
Glad to see you again and happy Mylotting!

lol I know how that is. I currently have 6 milk crates filled with books stacked on one another (secured together and to the wall of course) and another filled with books too heavy to go with that stack under my desk and that's not including the 5 or so school books I have sitting out all the time

I am out of room for books. Will need to start weeding through them again. :-(

I may never get to the 7 boxes of books I got from my mom way back when. I should probably start picking them up and just reading them randomly. Way back when was 1988, btw.

I am a bookaholic and would have loved to have had a chance to look at the books he gave you. I'm glad that you were not hurt though and am glad that your husband is going to secure the bookcase to the wall. I have books stacked everywhere - and I mean everywhere. Boxes of books under my bed etc. So many of them are 'treasures' that I cannot part with at all. I am very attached to my books - they are like old friends. and one of the wonderful things about gewtting old is that I sometimes forget the story and have the pleasure of re reading them again. LOL Blessings

Probably the coolest one was the collection of Pogo cartoons with the inscription:
"To Daddy with love from Dawn and Alan, Christmas 1959"
I was not quite 2 and Alan was only 2 months old.
