they say you should make reservations at least 6 months ahead of time for some character meals. but when i was there a few weeks ago i got some great advice. we did book some meals but then i found out about other meals when i was there. now if you call the night before around 8 pm to book a meal there are some opennings from people calling to cancel their meals the night before. so you still do have lotf of opportunities to get in the meals. also if you just show up at the restaurant and ask, there are some no shows that you can take their place

Yes,when we were there for the first time last month we found at four of our five reserved dinners that we were hungry sooner. But if we went ahead and ate we would be full at our reserved time meal. So,we went to the restaurants early and explained and some took us in right away and the other took us in within the next fifteen minutes. We were told that we may be able to go to some places and see if they have a table empty if we didn't make reservations.

I swear by making the reservations 6 months in advance. With the new system online it is easy to take a few minutes everyday and check for cancellations for restaurants you REALLY want but I like to know I've got my meals taken care of. This past trip it took only about 5 minutes to get the reservations I wanted. I will say- I wanted one reservation I didn't get but it forced me to try something new and it was WAY better than the restaurant I wanted at first.
P.S.- A GREAT character meal is the Chip and Dale's Harvest feast in the Land Pavilion in Epcot.

I've gone both ways. I would say though, if there is a meal that you want to go to, plan ahead. Let's face it, going to the World is a big investment. So, if your child (or you) have a favorite character, and there's a meal, this is a great way to really get some time with them, and it's so worth it to plan ahead. There are different size restaurants so that will greatly determine your success in getting in, as well as the time of year you go. Our favorite is Crystal Palace at Magic Kingdom for breakfaast with Winnie the Pooh and friends.
Other tips for the character meals, breakfast is always the cheapest (but it's still pretty expensive). If you book a meal with a late seating, sometimes they start putting out the food for the next meal.
Let them know if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary. We did this for my nephew and got a card and a cupcake, and all the characters came over to sing(priceless).

Although I`m a good cook, I doubt whether I would go to such places while at Disneyworld. I take sandwichs to eat while looking and playind and by the time the parade ends (and the fireworks) all I want is to go home. I usually leave an easy to heat diner at home and then to bed. We have always gone to aparthotels with big kitchens in Orlando.
