I have to agree with the first poster, "1984" was a great read as well. And if you like other such books, I'd also recommend "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley. That's another good one about what scary things may happen in the future, but it's more about control by creating mostly inferior people that won't be able to think on their own.

If you liked Animal Farm you would probably like 1984 by George Orwell. It was published in 1949 as a futuristic novel. We're of course well past that 1984 date but it still has a relevance for today. It's about a global totalitarian society where people are monitored 24 hours a day to ensure the purity of the system even against thought crimes. The party slogan was "He who controls the past, controls the future" and to do that the government propagandized language. The "Ministry of Truth" rewrote historical documents to fall in line with the government ideals they also controlled the news, entertainment, and the arts to enforce their propaganda. The "Ministry of Peace" dealt with War, and the "Ministry of Love" tortured people.
