I have been driving for almost nine years now and I sometimes forget to use my signal lights when turning on either left or right side. But I make sure that I turn carefully so not to cause any accidents. Some people use it in improper ways. They turn on their signal light and quickly make their turn. It should not be that way, right?

Hello maroseqf I am a careful driver and always put on the signal light well in advance before making a turn. But the roads here are narrow and traffic always chaotic unlike in western countries. So I also put out my hand and signal because some people will just ignore the signal lights and since here our traffic is always at a snails pace, hand signalling also is essential sometimes,to avoid accidents.... .he..he.....

I agree with the use of turn signals, as a Federally licensed commercial driver in the United States we have rules for how to turn and how to use the turn signals.
I've discussed some of the rules of turning but I did not provide any photographs of the diagrams that the government requires all commercial drivers to know. Maybe someday in the future I will do a full discussion on that topic.
As for the use of turn signals the Federal Highway Administration has made law in America that you must indicate your turn at a distance in feet from the turn based upon the speed that you are traveling. It does not matter how many driveways or roads there are it is about your speed of travel and your distance to the turn that you are about to make.
The rule is this: For vehicles going over 35 mph you must signal your intention to turn 350 feet before the turn and for vehicles traveling less than 35 mph the indication shall be 100 feet before the turn.
There is one other thing that we should all do and there are rules about this your position in your lane of travel and when to turn your tires. Your position in the lane can also indicate your intended direction of travel. I never like to see people making left turns from the right side of the lane. Generally it is a miscommunication that can cause other drivers to make a mistake. There are times that other drivers do intentionally become road hogs and block the flow of traffic for no reason at all and that can be frustrating.
Now while other countries do not have laws like our laws in the United States, can you find any reason to disagree with the wisdom of our law? I think it is a good one because if you know it you really do know where the other person is intending to go if they used their turn signals properly. Certainly proper use is the key!

Signal lights or traffic indicators are an important part of a vehicle, which has to be used always so as not to cause accidents or create griefs to other road users. The signal lights ought to be put on well before reaching the point of turning so as to give other road users an ample opportunity to act appropriately.
Hand signals could also be applied in certain cases, in addition to using the traffic indicators, if one is not sure that the indicators are glowing or working well. It is always better to be extra careful while driving.

There is times when i forget, but i try not to. Mainly cause i got pulled over once for not signalling. I got a warning that time. I signal almost all the time now. I just know there are times i forget. I don't signal though when i am out in the middle of no where and no one is around. Whats the point then?

Ah' but a good habit is bad to break...
We are creatures of habit and developing and keeping good habits is a good thing... So let the Universe know what you are doing, it really doesn't hurt and it keeps you in the habit to forget less often.

Hello, yes I always try and remember to use my signal lights when I am going to be turning. It just makes driving safer for everybody. For example, when I am driving behind someone who is going to be turning, if they put their signal lights on, then I know that I should slow down slightly in order to leave a safe gap between me and them whilst they make their turn, becasue they will need to slow down also before they turn. This would avoid a situation where I fail to slow down and end up going into the back of their car... I agree with what you said about signals being used properly, they should always be made in enough advance so that other drivers around you have enough time to respond

I use my signal lights during driving. To me signal lights is very important especially on turning in, overtake, or just stopping by the road. By using it, people can aware and ready to react for what action that you will be doing. I think now you should start using it everytime you corner girl. lol. Drive safely!

first of all people who do not use their turn signals are idiots. you need to let other drivers in advance where you are going. second if you get a ticket you will lose points on your dr.license and if the insurance co. find out they will be more than happy to raise your insurance rates. i use mine all of the time. i agree with you that a greater part of the population has forgotten what that little lever is even for. i have been curious to find out if they is a world wide recall on all of the cars on the road for a broken turn signal.....

I always have my signal light on when I need to make turning. I believe this is the safe way to drive as to inform people at the back to be aware. In fact, I really hate people for turning whenever they want without giving any signal. This is really annoying. My signal light will be turn on at least 3 seconds before making any turn so that people at the back will have enough time to react.

I always signal my turns, it's pretty much second nature to me now. It's important to signal in advance but not so far in advance that it confuses other drivers about where you're turning. In general you should put your light on after you are past the last road/street/etc before the one you're taking (if that makes sense!).

yeah sometimes they use it in wrong manner, or switch it on exactly few seconds after they turn or never switch it. Well I have been driving for tow years, it isn't that long, but I switch on the lights when I turn, well hope I am a good driver. :)

Signal lights should be used appropriately or you will be no more. Life is precious so guard it. Do not take careless chances. You are not not using the road code.Remember you are not the only person using the road. Imagine I am driving behind you and all of a sudden I have to break up because you just turn. I would be mad. Please note keep 'your head on' by remembering, if you forget you should not be on the road. When you come on the road always be alert and wise. To be communicating with us as lotters use the road code and remember!

I always try to use my signal lights and turn correctly, mainly just because one of my pet peeves is improper lane changes or cutting across lanes. You're supposed to turn on your signals for a full three seconds minimum before you make your lane change. At least, that's what I remember. It may be longer when turning on surface streets and such.
