Our National Consumer Complaint Center is proposing that consumer using credit card to pay for petrol/gas at the pumps (not at the counter) be require to key in personal identification number(PIN) or password. This is to prevent misuse, fraud as the current system only require the user to swipe the card without any signature or security number. What would be your opinion?.Do you use credit card at the pumps?.

I have occasionally used a card at self service pumps and, before chip and pin came into use, I was horrified that I only needed to swipe my card. That meant, of course, that if I lost my cards or had them stolen, I would have no protection against the finder or the thief draining my account. Now that we have to type in a PIN, I feel much more secure. Normally, I pay at the counter when buying gas. I also make sure that the card never leaves my sight because I once had it skimmed by a gas station attendant and the card was duplicated and used to withdraw cash in Italy. Fortunately, I was able to prove that I could not have been in Milan when the card was used and the considerable amount of money that was taken was returned. Although a PIN is only four digits, it is far more secure than a signature, even. I never sign the backs of my cards (but I can always produce my drivers licence as evidence of my signature).
