I had a horrible scare this morning!

My husband listens to the news while he's getting ready for work. I'm usually still in bed dozing or getting my morning started by getting ready to work out. This morning was a dozer, until my husband repeated a news headline that I didn't hear - "What happened to Rhebs?" Now, to most people here that means absolutely nothing, but to anyone who lives close to Baltimore and likes chocoate that's enough to jolt you right out of even the soundest of sleeps! Rhebs Candy Store is a little tiny house-converted-into-candy-store in Baltimore. They make all their own stuff, it's ALWAYS fresh and it is just to die for! My old boss (who is my current boss' wife) introduced me to Rhebs chocoaltes about 12 years ago. She'd bring them in for us for holidays or just for doing a good job. These chocolates are fantastic, it was love at first bite. Now, my current boss still gets them for us and this past Christmas we got a pretty big box of chocolates. Of course mine only lasted about 3 days. I can eat about a pound in one sitting, they are just that good. So, this morning, I am jolted out of a nice relaxing doze to be scared half out of my wits. I don't want to wait for the commercial break to be over with so I rush down to the computer. I mean, if they're closing I'm going to have to leave NOW (5 hours before they open and they're only a half hour away) to get in line for my last box(es) of Rhebs. I'm thinking I'm going to have to bundle up cause it's cold out there and I'll be in line for at least all of today. This place had over a 2 hour line at Christmas for their chocolates. So, I'm doing a search for Rhebs and the 2nd thing that comes up is an article from this mornings Baltimore paper that says Rhebs is leaving The Market. I frantically read the story to happily learn that they are closing their stall at a downtown market. Their main store (the little house) is not going ANYWHERE!!! WOOHOO!!!! I am such a happy camper now, but it's going to be fun putting a little scare in my co-workers if they haven't heard the news.

My daughter lives in a small town and they have a store like you mention that is an old home and I can't think of the name of it off hand but the candy is to die for. They also have some craft things in there too and gift items. A lot of people call it the "Chocolate House". I have to make a note to myself to go there next time I am at my daughters for a visit.

Wiseman House Chocolates is the name of the house in the town where my daughter lives. I just read from their online newspaper where they are making and will be serving chocolates at the Inaugural Ball, not sure how many others will also be making and serving their chocolates.

I think this stuff is a pretty penny, so I only get it when someone buys it for me. Although I think I might head up there this weekend and get a "small" box...

I'm glad your main store isn't closing! Where I live, in the Chicagoland area, we love our Fannie May. It was bought by another company years back and it's never been the same. They used to make these fruit flavored candy sticks, very small, sprinkled with sugar. They were to die for. They'd only make them during Christmas, and my sisters and I would look forward to them all year. The new owners don't make them anymore. The prices have gone up so high that I don't visit their store like I usually did either. But anyways, that's great news that your Rhebs is still going strong! Yay! Maybe you should go to the store to buy a box just to celebrate...LOL!

I was so tempted to run up there, but I have no clue where it is! I've never been to either location, I've always had them bought for me. Maybe this weekend I'll make a trip up there :)

reiny do not let your co workers hang to long that is just soooooooooo mean.heehee. I am not really into chocolate that much. In fact we have thee boxes of chocolates that I have put in our freezer that we got at Christmas that we have not eaten yet. I put them in the freezer so they would not go to waste. I know if you where here they would have been gone. One box is 2lbs and the other two boxes are 1lb each.

I was all ready to figure out a way to take the train trip down to wherever the hell you live and get to this place and get on line for these amazing chocolates too! I wanted to know what was so incredibly wonderful about them before they went out of business!lmao! I have never heard of them, but if you speak so highly of them then they must really be something! I'm glad you can still get them! Now want to send me a box?

You should be able to order some on-line. They wont be as fresh, but even at a couple days old they are awesome! The cremes just so melt in your mouth. You don't have to chew them at all, and the flavor just fills your whole mouth... Oh man, I have to go get me some of these now!

It's sad to hear that Rhebs is going to close. Are they too affected with the economic crisis? I can tell how much you love their chocolates. Honestly, I don't have any idea about their chocolate but based on what you said, it tastes good. I am a chocoholic too and it made me sad if one of those big chocolate company will close.

They aren't really closing. They're just taking their booth out of the downtown market. Their main store - where they make everything also - is staying open. It's actually not from the economy, but because of the conditions of the market.

Wow, this Rhebs must make really good chocolate! I know where I live there used to be a place called Mrs. G's that made their own chocolate. They, too, were in a small house with just a hand lettered sign out front. I never bought any of there chocolates but someone at work got some one time as a gift. I think they were chocolate covered cherries-not like the phoney crap they sell at christmas time. They were really good!

Rheb's chocolate covered cherries are like that too. So smooth and creamy, and the cherries are really flavorful... I have a friend who used to make chocolate brandied cherries, they were awesome too!

If you like chocolates at all, then it's definitely worth the trip! Or you can get them on-line...

Goodness me what a fright your favourite chocolate shop might be closing, what a night mare,no wonder you went so nuts, they must make really good chocolates, for a queue that long .I wonder if their sales went up on that day because so many people thought they were closing. We don't have anywhere local that make nice chocolates like that.In our local town we have Thorntons chocolate shop but they don't make thier own chocolates on site they must have a factory somewhere that makes them and ships them around to all the stores all over the country, not the same as your but very nice even though.I feel sorry for you as you missed out on your lay in bed.Mind you an emergency is an emergency is it not, mind you the queue will be even longer now the market stall is shut maybe they ought to open another shop instead as they are so popular they might not be able to keep up with demand.

Although they aren't that far - a half hour away - I wish they'd open a store down here a bit closer. Well, actually I'm glad they don't, because I'd be there all the time if they were closer!
