Hi MyLotters, happy new year! I'm sure most of you enjoyed the holidays unlike me. On New Year's Eve, I was robbed t gunpoint by three men aboard a motorcycle. They took everything including my ATM cards, credit cards, IDs, money, cellphone, eyeglasses, even my dinner! I was traumatized by the incident that now, every time I go out of my house even in broad daylight, I get very afraid and paranoid. When a stranger smiles at me or absentmindedly raises his hand, I would think he's out to get me. I don't want to go out at night anymore. And I'm already alarmed. Do I need to see a psychiatrist or something?
One more thing, in my country, seeing a psychiatrist means one is going crazy. It's funny but it's true.

I am so sorry that happened to you...I can only imagine how traumatic that must have been. Considering you are experiencing difficulty with normal activites, like going outside and having contact with people, I would say you should probably talk to someone who can help you deal with what happened to you. If you're unsure of whether or not to see a counselor - try talking to someone you really trust first (a very close relative or friend, or a group of friends) and see if that helps you in any way. You don't necessarily have to see a Psychiatrist -- they prescribe medication. I don't know if you're in school but you could try talking to a guidance counselor, social worker, etc. And it does not mean you're going crazy -- most people experience something terrible at one point in their lives and need to talk about it.
