When Food Shopping do you look at the Price of Food First?

Do you look at the price of the food first? Do you buy stuffs that are 2 for the price of 1? I admit I am guilty of these things. What with the economic crunch and budgeting reasons. What about you?

I look at the sale items. Sometimes they're a great deal, sometimes they aren't. I always look at the unit pricing. Sometimes it's cheaper to buy a large bottle of ketchup. Other times you get more ketchup and pay less by buying two smaller bottles. Sometimes it's cheaper to buy the discounted store brand of beans, toilet paper, milk whatever. Other times it's cheaper to buy the major brand name item that's on sale. I also look for mis marked items. For example I recently bought a package of beef ribs that should have been around 10-12 dollars but they were mis marked at 2 dollars so they sold them to me for 2 dollars. That's a great deal. I generally know what I want when I go to the store but I'm always willing to revise my list if I find great deals.

Always. I live close to three supermarkets and I wait for the weekly sale papers and I develop our weekly menu from what's on sale. I shop all three markets for sale items and do the remainder of our weekly shopping at whatever store has the most sales items that are included on our menu,

Yeah, the price of food and the fixed income really presents a problem for me. I plan my meals in my head once I get to the store. I look at all the specials but only buy those which I will use and also I try to avoid the unhealthy snacks such as potato chips or crisps as some call them. Sometimes canned kidney beans or black beans which I use often in chilis and other dishes are really cheap and I am tempted to buy more than I need right now. I then look at the expiry dates and if they are just about to expire or have already expired I don't buy a lot even though I know the expiry date is more or less a guideline. No point in having old food hanging around either. I also try to buy fruits and vegetables in season. Yesterday I went shopping and a two pound bag of Empire Apples was .99 cents, that is half the normal price. They looked lovely so I bought four pounds. Last week huge heads of green cabbage were on sale for .99 a head. I bought one, cut it in half and simmered the half head slowly until the leaves were tender. Then I made some cabbage rolls with brown rice and a bit of finely cubed pork and onions. I baked them in the oven topped with a can of meatless spaghetti sauce which was on special for $.67 (usually 1.29). It made a huge pan of cabbage rolls. It came to $.87 per serving. I gave half of them to my son and daugher-in-law's family and had two meals myself accompanied with mashed potaotes. I shredded the other half of the cabbage very finely, added a grated carrot, a bit of grated onion, and a finely chopped apple. I made a dressing with vinegar and oil. It made 4 cups. I had the cabbage salad like that for a few meals and when I got tired of it there was still some left. I added some walnuts and raisins and some low fat mayonaise. It made a wonderful Waldorf salad. Well so it goes. These days we have to be inventive. Good luck to you.

It is not the first thing I look at, but I do check out the price of something before I put it in my cart. I always know what something is supposed to ring up when I get to the checkout, so I can make sure it rings up the right price too.

Living in Oslo, the fourth most expensive city in the whole world? you would surely be looking at the price first before buying it. Well, not everybody actually because Norwegian can afford what they wanted, only foreigners like me who valued money so much, would do that. Youll go crazy with the prices of the food here in oslo.. sooo expensive...

I always look for the price before getting it, the only thing I don't check is the stuff that I normally get every week. We do grocery shopping every week because we don't have a big freezer to stock the meat, although there are some stuff that we only get once a month.
