Do Indian movies still depend on a lot of melodrama for hits?

Most of the Indian movies have an overdose of what is called as emotional content. At least that is what the movie makers still seem to think as very essential.
Indian movies have always had more melodrama than just drama. Why?

yes they dramatic but thats the best in them, thats why they are so popular.. there is very different people in India right now and situation in country is still very dramatic.. like in "Slumdog millionaire" we can see very rich people and very poor - that is very touching I think..
